Scrabble is a traditional game and one played a lot by my family over the years. I bought this set to replace our old set that had become tattered and torn. No complaints; it's shiny new and well constructed. The rules are on a sheet rather than in a booklet and you will need to be armed with your own dictionary. It is a great game, demanding thought, some knowledge and a bit of a tactical mind: what's not to like? A classic.

on the whole it is presented well but i would like to have had the little dictionary/rules book with it. i have had scrabble before and the booklet was included. also the tiles are much smaller and don't fit the squares on the board properly.

Received product today after much anticipation, since scrabble is a firm favourite in our family. Board was to replace an older set, but to my disappointment, the board itself is flimsy, and the squares are just stickers- not with ridges to keep the tiles in, so the tiles slide all over the place. Also, as other customers commented, there is no book with rules/words, and no score card! Not worth the money in my opinion, would much prefer to give a few extra pounds and get a set that will be enjoyable to play with. Feel like Mattel are ripping me off.

The original version of this much-loved game is simple to use and is very much the first thing you'll need to start your Scrabble niche. My Mum kindly bought this for me to replace my previous Original Scrabble set as I thought the old look became a bit old hat.

Don't worry about the new presentation. This is what it looks like from now on since 2013. You are not looking at an American version. It is definitely the new UK version. The board is a little bit brighter in colour and a little less "greeny". Plus, the new font of the letters is a bit bolder too. It's modern but not boring or over-the-top in any way. It still has that subtle feeling. The only other thing that's changing is of course the official word list. The scoring, tile distribution and rules are exactly the same as ever before.

The design is exactly the same as the original (and I specifically mean "original"). It's simple, durable enough (my previous version did very, very well to last 9 and a half years until my naughty dog chewed a tile!) and doesn't cause any frustrations to disturb gameplay. The tiles fit on the board well if you put them right in the middle of the squares but they don't actually lock onto them. Also it doesn't look right if you put the tiles right next to each other (which one of my regular opponents has a habit of) so they touch as they end up looking too short. The silver sides are just a print, but they do separate the squares nicely. A turntable would be a bonus but there doesn't seem to be a good quality one out there as far as I can see, so please take care when turning it round so you don't slide the tiles inadvertently. You'll find them in Scrabble clubs but you could design one, I suppose. The rules sheet is also a very slight con. It is well written and clear but there is slightly less information in it and it is a two-sided sheet that I had to fold in half by myself to save a bit of space.

It is a very competitive game. I would definitely recommend some books, such as 101 Ways to Win at Scrabble, and a dictionary/wordlist (check out my review of the latest edition of "Official Scrabble Words", accurate from May 2015 onwards) to sharpen your skills and really get you hooked. I'd start with small, cheap ones before moving on to big, heavy, pricey ones.

There are other designs of this game but not all work out. If you're looking for a design that locks the tiles, I recommend the large print version of the game which has proved successful, according to their reviews. Don't buy a complex set, such as the deluxe versions, as they're not as well designed as they should be (perhaps Mattel are trying too hard?), therefore poor value. For travelling, the new pocket version is okay but not the new travel version as it appears to be too shoddily designed to fit the tiles securely.

All in all, it is a good and very simple design. It's just not at its peak. It needs to be just that bit more user-friendly for 5 stars.

Exactly what I expected, but it's a shame the tiles were not big enough for the squares and it did not have the scoring pad or pencil

I gave my original scrabble set to the charity shop when we moved house. The one we had was a proper one made of wood. This one does the trick but I find the tiles are a little too small to cover the squares properly
