5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing quality huge rock music NOT to be missed, re-released, 25 Oct 2013
This review is from: Original Album Series (Audio CD)
This seems to be released at the same time as a number of similar rock music package re-release sets, but while you may have heard of most of the others bands, or might eventually with this band you really should not take the risk of missing out at all.
Their commerical peak was probably the early 90's, almost breaking huge globally and touring with AC/DC, Pearl Jam and others. In recent years they have made a kind of triumphant return, their last studio album being a really well crafted top notch heavy rock modern classic.
This set holds their first essential, usually most highly respected studio albums and there are many really outstanding and truly stunning moments across them.
They may have initially been percieved as a kind of 'Christian' band, and there is religious/spiritual symbolism and a few references in songs, but that really should not at all stop you from enjoying these absolutely fantastic huge rock tunes. At a time when big hair Glam Metal was ending and Grunge was trundling in, this band avoided the first and influenced the next. Many bands, including Pearl Jam, Extreme and others have mentioned and given credit to this amazing strong band over the years.

Many say the best KING'S X album might be 'Gretchen goes to Nebraska'- with strong Beatles influences, it is at times, heavy, funky, groove-filled, psychedelic, catchy as anything.
The next two album are similar in sound, complex-almost progressive rock in many parts, but there is always a strong mix of classic funk rock, rock n' roll, 70's rock all together.
Their guitar player Ty Tabor is also one of the most very underrated in rock music-his guitar solos are some of the most stunning you are likely to ever hear, I garuantee.
The last album in this set-Dogman- was when things were changing for the band, and they loosened up, lyrics much more deep, personal and the album is a very 'Grunge' 90's sound. Very cool for fans of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam etc.

So really get this collection, as no rock-even no music fan- will at all be disapointed on hearing any tune from this massively influential great living legend rock band.

For fans of: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Metallica, Black Stone Cherry, Aerosmith, Soundgarden, ALice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Green Day, The Who, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, and any modern/classic rock music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheaply packaged, fantastic music!, 16 Sep 2013

Well do I remember attending King's X's first UK performance at the Marquee all those years ago and being stunned by their fresh approach. Great tunes played with new sounds and fantastic interplay. Unfortunately, none of the live recordings capture that live sound in full, so the best we're left with is the studio output. The first three of the albums included here are stupendously good, although a remastered and slightly remixed version of OotSP wouldn't go amiss.

This release loses a star for the packaging, which is among the cheapest I've yet encountered. A card "box" a little thicker than a standard jewel case, containing 5 card sleeves with the CDs themselves. Artwork costs must have come in at under ten quid, allowing them to keep the selling price so low - don't expect any kind of liner notes (not even what came with the original albums/CDs) or photos. What you get is a poorly-reproduced version of the album cover on each card sleeve and that's yer lot.

The music, of course, is faultless. Thunderous, soaring and touching by turns - all underpinned by Doug Pinnick's various eccentric bass sounds using multiples of four strings. But you knew that already.

Worth buying because you get the 4 King's X albums that really matter for a highly decent price, and Dogman (which has a few real highlights) thrown in as a bonus.

King's X - quality band, quality tunes, often unfairly dismissed due to the lyrical content (it's a bit "religious/spiritual") but these guys are serious players.

This boxset is excellent value for money and a perfect way to get some King's X back into your collection. Don't expect brilliant packaging, its the typical cardboard sleeve variety as is the norm for the Original Album Series - but you're not buying this as some collectors item - it's for the music - and that's top notch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ripe For Rediscovery, 18 Jan 2014

Having followed King's X since their self titled effort in 1993, they really have put out
a ridiculous amount of seriously brilliant music. This is their first 5 albums. The first 2
"Out of The Silent Planet" and "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" suffer from that late 80's rock
production, but contain many of their very best songs (King, Goldilox, Far Far Away, Over My Head,
Summertime, Send a Message, The Burning Down) "Faith Hope Love" is their overblown concept album, really
long, a little messy but mostly jaw-droopingly good. "King's X" saw them shift into slightly darker territory,
and gone were the religious overtones of the first 3 albums. I have always loved this one. "Dogman" completes
the set. New producer, a grunge-y direction, I think this is the weakest album here, some of the songs
don't seem fleshed out enough, probably intentional. You could make a great EP from Dogman though (Dogman, Pretend,
Fool You, Flies & Blue Skies, Complain, Cigarettes, Go To Hell, Pillow).
It would not be wise to believe King's X stopped after their major label exit. "Ear Candy" (rather mysteriously left
out of this box set, as it was their last album on a major) remains my favourite King's X album. "Tapehead" (their first
album on an independent) in 1998 is also an absolute gem.

If you're like me and think this band are underrated and you wanted to purchase a few albums to pledge the faith with them, then get this album set. I was planning to get 'Dogman', 'Self-titled' and 'Faith, Hope, Love', but saw this and am so happy!! I am currently listening to 'Goldilox' from 'Out of the Silent Planet' and am glad I've been able to get that album and 'Gretchen Goes To Nebraska', which is dubbed their best album by many fans online it seems. NO EXCUSES, IF YOU'RE A FAN OF ROCK OR METAL, THIS IS A MUST HAVE IF YOU DON'T HAVE THESE ALBUMS YET. SO HAPPY!!

An influential band with wide influences, more the sort of band thats liked by musicians as they always require a few listens to appreciate. Each album stands up on its own merits, each arguably a classic.
