4.0 out of 5 stars A competent, brief description of a crucial battle, 12 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Coral Sea 1942 (Kindle Edition)
This is a straightforward, concise account of the Battle of the Coral Sea. This battle was the first reverse that Japan suffered in her expansion to the south during the war, and although she suffered lower losses than the Americans, it was a turning point, so strategically, it was a defeat.
This account is well-written, without unnecessary padding, but still contains personal accounts. It won't take long to read, but will give you all the necessary facts.

4.0 out of 5 stars An important turning point., 11 Aug 2013

This review is from: Coral Sea 1942 (Kindle Edition)
A fairly brief but interesting look at a battle that has been given little attention in this
country but was the first reverse the Japanese had received after their victories in
Singapore,Hongkong and the Phillapines and of course after their sneaky attack on Pearl Harbour.
The strategy is discussed and of course this is very interesting as it was the first battle involving carriers out of sight of each other and it turned the Japs back from their eventual aim,the invasion of Australia.Easy to read and well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts battle on radar., 10 July 2013
This review is from: Coral Sea 1942 (Kindle Edition)
A good bite-sized history book which proves overview on strategy and heroism, but doesn't repeat itself or become laborious to read. Was recommended through a publisher promotion. Freeman rightly puts the battle back on the radar for people interested in the Second World War (and particularly the war with the US against Japan). Not only does the author remind you of the significant strategic aim of the battle but his arguments convince the reader that the US achived their objective (despite heavy losses). The Coral Sea genuinely seemed to be a great turning point and learning curve for the American military.

4.0 out of 5 stars Concise, authoritative account of key battle., 18 Jun 2013
This review is from: Coral Sea 1942 (Kindle Edition)
A more than accomplished account of a battle which is often overlooked, in terms of its drams and importance. Freeman is conscious of both recounting grand strategy and also individual testimonies of combatants. The book is naturally weighted towards material dedicated to the Americans, which is not to say the author ignores the Japanese story. What this book is clear on however is that, despite America's considerable losses, the Battle of the Coral Sea was a US victory.
