5.0 out of 5 stars Chvrches take us Back to the Future
What a brilliant, sublime paradox this album is. Having been a teenager of the 80's this album revives some fantastic memories of bands like Ultravox, Depeche Mode, A-ha, Yazoo, and many others with it's screaming synths, electronic beats and great songwriting. But to purely tag this music as 80's revivalism would be doing Chvrches a huge injustice. What Bones has done is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much better
The main appeal of Chvrches is Lauren Mayberry's wonderful, soaring voice. How disappointing that on 2 of the 12 tracks the vocals are handed over to one of the other band members - oh, so bland I'm afraid and you can't help thinking what Lauren could have done with those 2 songs. Never mind, don't forget that the Beatles used to let Ringo sing a tune now and again...

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably good, 1 Oct 2013

This review is from: The Bones Of What You Believe [Digipack] (Audio CD)
I was bit late to the party here, first discovering CHVRCHES on Jools Holland's BBC show "Later...". Amongst the usual lacklustre set of pensioners and formulaic show-offs on his show, there were CHVRCHES - who showed up just how tired and/or pointless the other acts were.

This album is bursting with pure energy, but the trio also manage to add beauty to each track. There's reminders of Cyndi Lauper in all that synth energy; Sarah Blackwood (Dubstar era) in Lauren's perfectly sweet and unpretentious vocals, that are somehow both delicate and powerful at the same time; and Alcian Blue in the shimmering soundscapes (especially 'You Caught The Light'). In particular, the track 'Recover' is almost too good, having one great chorus followed by another one that's even better!

This is a 12 track album with no obvious fillers, so if you liked any of the individual tracks, buy it now. It's like eating chocolate and raw lemons all at the same time.

5.0 out of 5 stars euphoric electronic gem!, 9 Oct 2013
This review is from: The Bones Of What You Believe [Digipack] (Audio CD)
Came across this band when I heard gun on radio 1 not knowing who the band were investigated there songs on you tube and have to say blown away! Hard to put in a genre best explained as indie electronic synth pop with a heavy nod to the 80's album all the way thru is amazing. Keeps surprising you with different hooks and melodies if you want uplifting feel good anthems this album is for u. Each to there own and everyone has an opinion but to previous reviewer there sound is completely different to london grammer and is unfair to say reviewers are friends or family of the band they just appreciate good original music can't wait to see them live.
