After hearing nothing but positive things about Turtle Beach headsets I was really excited to try these out on my new Xbox. When I opened up the packaging I was very impressed with how everything was put together, the nice little details and the overall quality of the product. They were incredibly easy to set up and I went straight into playing some Forza Horizon 2 only to be unpleasantly surprised..
They sounded weird.
I fiddled with the audio settings on both the game and the console, but they still just sounded odd and I couldn't quite work out why. I then decided to try out some Battlefield 4, hoping to get a rich audio experience from a large arena of bullets and explosions but they sounded even worse. Low bass noises sounded a bit distorted and the sound of gunfire was crackly. Even more off-putting was the incredibly narrow sound stage, making you feel way too enclosed.
I started to get a bit worried and tried out a bunch of different games but nothing improved. I then decided to reference them against my normal headphones, a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770s, only to find them literally 10x better. Swithcing between the two I got a better idea what was wrong with the Turtle Beach set.. they were incredibly muddy and also way too tight on your head, making them really uncomfortable even in short sessions.
To reference further, I tried plugging them into my laptop and listening to music. I tested a variety of styles from rock to hip-hop and electronic, but they all sounded flat out bad. Once again there was very little separating between the frequency ranges and the stereo field, it all just sounded cluttered, muddy and crackly. I even let some other people try them out and see what they think - only to hear the same thing back.. they don't sound good.
All of this was enough to make me think they are broken, but I can tell that they are not. It's all left me utterly baffled as to the unanimously glowing reviews of their "great sound quality". I just don't understand, do these people have no idea what sound quality sounds like? I was expecting them to sound great but I would have been content if they just sounded okay.. but they actually sound bad, to the point I don't want to use them after 5-10 minutes of gaming.
I just don't know what to think, it seems like I'm the only person that has a problem with them but I can't understand how ANYONE would like how these sound. I'll be sending these back and probably won't try Turtle Beach again :/
Maybe it's just me?
