Having re-located my (BT) hub to a different part of the house, I needed to extend the Wi-Fi range. The house has VERY thick stone walls, and I had previously tried BT's Dual Band Wi-Fi extender as well as other power line extenders, with very limited success. This product, however, works brilliantly. It took me about 2 minutes to set up and I get the full five bars on the side of the house furthest from the hub! I'm not sure yet whether I shall need to buy additional plugs for other parts of the house (which would start to be rather costly). So, although you could probably get away with cheaper solutions in houses with "normal" walls, if you live in a property with very thick stone walls, this works really well.

This is the BT Mini Wi-Fi 500 Home Hotspot Power Adapter Kit, a simply piece (or rather two piece) of technology to help you get the best Wi-Fi anywhere in your home and to increase the speed and reliablity of your network. Despite being branded as "BT" you can still use this device with any network service provider and with any wireless device and router. It's also easy to use being "plug and play" in the real sence that you simply plug it in to your socket and forget about it. Being the "mini" kit simply means that it is smaller and has a power saving mode, there is no difference in performance with "WiFi500" kit.

If your looking to increase the range of your wi-fi network in your home then this really is ideal. A lot of home have several spots where your siginal strength drops out either slightly or totally and this helps prevent this happening. Obviously the speed of your broadband is determined by what you have signed up for with your service provider (and rather what speed they deliver you down the line), so please don't expect this to massively increase your download and browsing speeds.

The only thing preventing this item from getting 5 stars is the fact that its too "wide" and can't blocks a second electrical socket, if only it was a bit narrower it would be ideal, as other than the width its a great item that does what it says on the box.

The BT Wifi 500 Home Hotspot Multi Kit is a clever little kit that extends the wi-fi coverage within your home. In a nutshell, the kit takes your wireless broadband signal and extends it out to two further areas of your house via the kit's wi-fi hotspot plug-ins.

Set-up is simplicity itself. The kit comes with a one sheet instruction manual, which guides you through the handful of stages you need to go through in order to get your additional wi-fi hotspots in place.

Once set-up, you can simply connect to the two additional hotpots by linking up to them with your device and inputting the unique wireless key (it's printed on a small plastic card that can be slipped-off the reverse of the hotpots at any time).

I'm no internet / computer wizard, however I managed to get the whole thing up and our iPad connected to one of the additional hotspots inside of 5 minutes from unpacking the box for the first time.

We've had the kit in place now for a good couple of weeks and I have to say that we're over the moon with their performance. This wireless signal that they extend outwards is strong and constant (even for the basic package we get from our cheapo ISP), without any noticeable fluctuation of signal. We can now stream films etc in all of the rooms in our house as well as within a good portion of our garden. Furthermore, the extenders don't seem to have weakened or diluted the signal at all; just pushed it out to two additional areas of our home.

So all in all, we'd say that the kit is a cracking piece of simple equipment that does a handy job perfectly.

Probably a one-off purchase for most people. Combines the ease of using Wi-Fi and 2 Ethernet ports for my downstairs area which had Wi-Fi access issues. For most modern smart TV or TV boxes, Ethernet is the best way to source your internet requirements. It is faster and more stable - so less disturbance in your TV viewing. Instructions on set-up is fairly easy. However, make sure you have correct length(s) of Ethernet cabling before you embark. I have experienced no problems in keeping this plugged in 24 hours/day. Wi-Fi for my mobile and tablet had no issues even when used in near-by rooms on the same floor. No regrets in this purchase.

'Works out of the box' is one of those euphemistic phrases that normally means having to decipher a user guide translated from an ancient eastern language whilst scratching your head wondering which bit goes where.

Not so with this product.

1. Plug one end of the supplied ethernet cable into the powerline adapter
2. Plug the other end into your router
3. Plug the adapter into a wall socket
4. Take the wi-fi extender to the room where you want wi-fi and plug it into a wall socket

That's it! It will show up in the list of wireless devices then you connect to it just like any other.

A couple of tips:
a. Make a note of the admin password and wireless key before step 4 (both are on the label attached to the extender)
b. If you are going to change the password, download and install the BT Device Configuration Tool which will make things easier (available from [...] )

I don't think they could have made the installation any easier if they tried.

If you're looking to extend the wi-fi range in your home then I can highly recommend this product. There are a couple of rooms in the house upstairs that have a weaker wi-fi signal and I've been looking for something to extend that range that's simple to setup and use.

On the box BT state that this can be used with any broadband provider, I use Virgin Media and have one of their home hub thingys. There are two parts to this kit, a broadband extender and a mini home hotspot. The broadband extender is the part that you connect to your existing router to extend the range and this in turn talks to the mini home hotspot. Very easy to setup and easily connected via the included ethernet cable.

The mini home hotspot plugs into any power socket and acts as a wireless hotspot (you can also connect devices via cable if needed) to extend the range of your internet connection. I chose to plug this into a spare socket on the upstairs landing so that all the rooms upstairs had access to a better connection.

That's about as simple as it gets, nothing to it really. Since installing the BT Home Hotspot Kit the wireless internet range upstairs has been greatly improved. It got to the point where my sister couldn't even get a wi-fi signal on her phone, but now has a perfect signal. The speed has also been increased for those using laptops upstairs too.

Can't recommend it highly enough, easy to setup and works flawlessly.

Like all powerline-based products, the BT Wi-Fi Home Hotspot 500 is very much a plug and play device. The 'Broadband Extender Flex' is plugged into a mains socket near to your router and your router then plugs into this via an Ethernet cable. The 'Wi-Fi Home Hotspot' plug is then connected to a separate mains socket and automatically connects to the Extender. Network devices can then connect to the Wi-Fi Home Hotspot plug either wirelessly or via one of the 2 built-in Ethernet ports, allowing these devices to have full network and internet connectivity.

Being AV500 I found the data throughput to be very fast and full stutter-free HD movie streaming of MKV files was easily possible. Even better, I noticed no degradation of network throughput when the BT Wi-Fi Home Hotspot 500 was used alongside my existing TP-Link AV300 powerline devices, so integration with these was very impressive and had no adverse effects on performance.

The BT Wi-Fi Home Hotspot 500 is a very reliable and robust way of extending network coverage using home powerlines, recommended.

Useful for extending wifi to just one room.

I returned the BT Mini Wi-Fi hotspot to Amazon as it did not fulfil my needs to provide WiFi via the mains supply to more than one room. I have subsequently ordered a Netgear Range Extender Netgear WN2500RP-100UKS N600 4-Port Universal Dual Band Wi-Fi Range ExtenderWN2500RP instead.

The BT Mini Hotspot does not have an external antenna and is low powered. I found that the kit will provide WiFi over a distance of around 4 metres in the same room, but the strength of the signal would not pass through one ceiling to the adjoining room directly above it. For some the BT Mini Hotspot will be perfectly adequate for covering a single WiFi blindspot in one room I am sure, but the unit has its limitations - don't expect it to cover your whole house as I did, it won't.

A very straight forward way of extending your existing network. Simply connect to your router via an ethernet cable and plug in to a socket. The socket does have to be on the wall and not on an extension cord, then place your mini extender into another socket and away you go. The two mini extenders have two plugs on the top for ethernet cables for hard wiring plus a wifi signal which has a separate password and runs separately from your existing network. It appears to be faster than my existing router so far, as I now have a wifi signal in the room I am in. It is also easy to hard wire any piece of equipment that can connect to the internet but is not a wifi enabled.

I live in a large & very old house with very thick walls. I have had alot of trouble getting broadband in parts of my house so this looked like a simple & pretty cheap solution. And so it was. Easy set up straight from the box. Had it going within 10 minutes of opening it. No need to drill holes in my wall - this is a fantastic product and cheaper than getting a second box. Neat & compact. Clean & simple. Delighted !
