Great Hardware, Limited Firmware/Software
on 22 September 2013
First impressions of and out of the box I thought - FANTASTIC. It installed easily, the wifi signal was pretty good, it even has a standard aerial socket so you can add a bigger aerial if you really need. Mine is behind my TV so that might be handy, and I have velcroed the K10A to the back of my TV via the back of an HDMI Switch with IR and that sits on the back of an HDMI receiver box, as I am transmitting HDMI from a Virgin Tivo box in another room via an old Coaxial aerial cable that was originally installed with the TV in my Kitchen. So I get 1080p HDMI over Coax in the Kitchen over about 20 metres! When buying the K10A I forgot to buy a wireless mouse which was a mistake in hindsight as the K10A doesn't work with an Apple wireless Keyboard using bluetooth I discovered. The more I delved into this keyboard issue the K10A seems not to support bluetooth keyboards. But how can that be? its Android 4.2.2?!! So it absolutely should out of the box. The Apple keyboard paired after some fiddling but then just echoed key presses. So it seems you need an Air Keyboard/Mouse when you buy this unit.
Pros are that the unit is small, good aerial wifi reception, quick CPU, on board USB and micro USB and is running 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
Faults: The K10A does not work with VMlite VNC Server even though it should, since no rooting is required for VNC Lite and DroidMote does not work either as it should according to its Amazon description here. So either the K10A needs rooting after you get it out of the box or basically it doesn't work. I don't see why I should have to root my new box if there are options for not having to, like VMLite VNC which states it doesn't need the Android server rooted to work.
Secondly and very importantly I think the reason that VMLite VNC Server does not work and cannot work is because there is no Windows PC USB Driver!! The Windows 7 Generic driver cannot recognize the Justop hardware and JUSTOP do not make this driver available or any details to find a Google USB driver that can replace the Generic Windows one that fails. I have even tried the ADB universal driver and that does not pick up the hardware either, so I just have an unrecognised USB device. This is very tedious, unnecessary and rather weakens JUSTOP as an OEM as its very unprofessional not to have this covered off.
This Jelly Bean version needs the icon interface overhaul you see on Samsung S4's etc, this could have been done to sharpen it up a bit.
I have installed PLEX, as that is by far the best media player available, on it but found that the movies stall (even with a 9mb D/L speed over Wifi, when they do not via my Apple TV (ATV3) using PlexConnect to my Mac over Ethernet which intern pulls and streams movies from my Synology Diskstation 211j. Nor does it stall using my Samsung S4 over wifi, so something is amiss with the hardware/software interoperability perhaps when run over Wifi. I have not tested the K10A with Ethernet.
If Plex worked properly and flawlessly over wifi I would give this product 4 stars and if the rest above was solved then I would give the product 5 stars as it has the potential hardware wise, price wise too as it is priced correctly. I can stream fine with Plex to my laptop, via my MAC pulling content from my NAS, the laptop is 3 feet away from the K10A and that is on wifi and works fine, so in my opinion I can only conclude that it is the K10A that is at fault here. So its either the built in wifi or its the 4.2.2 K10A Android firmware running Plex on its own hardware that is the primary issue.
Please Justop sort this out or provide the instructions for the users to fix easily and you will have very happy customers and sell lots of units of this I am sure.
