This is a very unreliable printer. On the plus side, it's fairly cheap and seems to have low running costs. Setup is pretty simple, print quality is good, pages come out quickly, scan quality is fine for documents. So - what's the reason for the 2-star review?

There are several fairly major problems with it. First and foremost, although it's marked as compatible with Windows 8 it's not, at least out-the-box. The supplied driver works fine on Win7 but not Win8.1. It doesn't allow installation saying that the version of Windows is wrong. The latest driver on Dell's website, also marked as compatible with Win8.1, has the same problem. Finally I tried one called "Dell Open Printer Driver", from Dell, which does install and work but it's a pain to find and not the one they recommend for this printer. This problem has been reported frequently online with many people just returning them as unusable.

The next major issue is that the printer often refuses to print. It's on the network, you can ping it and interact with the control panel, it shows as "Ready" in Windows, it shows as "Ready" on the printer's display but printing just stalls, as does the management software. The only recourse is to power it off and on again. This is also often reported, with a common "fix" being to do a full settings reset, power off and power on. This does work, but only for a day or so. Basically, get used to switching it off and on again before you want to print something.

Finally there's a really irritating beep that just doesn't want to go away. When the phone rings - if the printer's connected to the phone line to use as a fax - it continues to beep, loudly, for a few minutes afterwards. After you wake it from sleep - if it wakes - it beeps loudly for several minutes. After it's powered on it beeps, loudly, for a few minutes afterwards. Which is *really* annoying if it's at home and you have occasional power glitches during the night. After you print a page it beeps, loudly, for a few minutes afterwards. There's no error, no message, no indication that it wants attention in some way, just a loud beep every 30 seconds until it goes to sleep again. I've not been able to find any option to disable this anywhere in the menus either on the printer or in the control software.

If it helps anyone, the "Open Printer Driver" from Dell is here:

Wish I hadn't bought this. It was a nightmare to set up and only worked once. Definitely a "Don't Buy".
