The Wolf (uk) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unreal (Audio CD)
We should not leave poor Mr Gamber (writing on alone
(and feeling "kind of bummed") with his enthusiasm for this fine album.

It turns out that Hebronix is one Daniel Blumberg, former front man
with an ensemble called Yuck, about whom I know absolutely nothing.
Mr Blumberg, together with help from producer Neil Hagerty, has delivered
an altogether extraordinary album with his solo debut 'Unreal'. It's only
seven tracks long (although six of those pitch in at around seven minutes
and above) but what it lacks in longevity it more than makes up for with
imagination and bags of energy. I sense that our host may be a bit of a
hippie at heart. Things often veer close to a Summer of '69 sensibility with
his clear affection for jangly guitars and luminous vocal arrangements.

Opening number 'Unliving' is a perfect example of a simple but lovely tune
taking its time to find a way through the wilderness until the song breaks
apart in the middle in a cloud of sun-drenched flutes and blissed-out harmonies.
'Wild Whim', too, is an expansive invention with more than a whiff of early
Neil Young (circa 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere') about it and none the
worse for that! Final track 'The Plan' evolves slowly against a steady piano
ostinato and angry-wasp-trapped-in-a-jam-jar-guitar decorations but has at its
warm heart the kind of languid melody you'd want to spend a whole evening with.

In its guileless and refreshingly unpolished way 'Unreal' is a very real gem.

Highly Recommended.
