I loved this book. It is written with great humour and vivacity. The writer grew up in Alaska and when not yet twenty married a young biologist and spent the rest of her life travelling by sled and canoe all over Alaska, collecting data for the first large-scale study of the flora and fauna of the region, beginning with an in-depth study of the life habits of the caribou.
It is a marvelous insight into what it was like to live in the early part of the 20th century (they married around 1920). the later part of the book is about the situation now, especially the struggle to maintain wilderness areas and keep them safe from the destruction of big business. Highly recommended.
