Being a fairly old AIC fan(since the Staley days), I looked forward to this album with great anticipation. I really enjoyed their 2009 comeback effort, ' Black gives way to blue' and believed in William Duvall they had found a singer worthy of taking Staley's place.
I was disappointed. The problem with this album, especially the first half, all the songs sound the same. You could walk out of the room when track one was playing, come back in when track three was playing and still think it was the same song. It has a sludge metal type feel to it and this coupled with the harmony vocals, which totally sound overused make it a pretty dull listen.
Things do improve slightly in the second half with scapel easily being the standout track, Phantom Limb and Hung on a hook ok, but they can't save this from being, at best a VERY average album. I've given it multiple listens and my view hasn't changed.
A bit more variety next time.
