5.0 out of 5 stars Girls! Girls! Girls!
Great collection of Elvis classics, soundtracks and albums tracks and singles. Sound quality good on studio cuts, not so great on the soundtrack versions but that is to be expected. A nice package complete with informative booklet with colour reproductions of the covers of his albums, singles and EPs. He really did produce some beautiful music in '62. The Pot Luck LP...

4.0 out of 5 stars caveat emptor: all the released-in-1962 vinyl & movie songs only!, 8 Sep 2013

big difference from sessions and releases! a clue is a question: where's PLANTATION ROCK and MAMA? not here, because they came out much later. another clue: included are many 1961 session songs which were issued the following year: FOLLOW THAT DREAM, KID GALAHAD.

having said that > it's always a pleasure to listen to these songs from three of his best movies, but more importantly, because Elvis is engaged in the material and his voice is powerful (even when crooning). in addition, we do find some actual "movie versions" - EARTH BOY and THANKS TO THE ROLLING SEA (I'm pretty sure THANKS was "unintentionally" issued as an a capella version on the ELVIS ARON PRESLEY boxed set in 1980, however). we also get some snippets of movie dialogue...pretty cool. sound is okay on these film versions.

that "crooning" has always turned off the '50s purists but hey, good music is good music. i'll take THAT'S SOMEONE YOU NEVER FORGET over ANYPLACE IS PARADISE, personally.

correct me if I'm wrong: also contained is the first CD appearance of ON TOP OF OLD SMOKEY (?).

special note: the follow up "studio" album to SOMETHING FOR EVGERYBODY was, in a way, not a studio album. it was a collection and a very strong one. I give POT LUCK a four star rating and SFE a three, here on Amazon.

A nice package complete with informative booklet with colour reproductions of the covers of his albums, singles and EPs. He really did produce some beautiful music in '62. The Pot Luck LP contained here is outstanding and the many examples of teen pop on these discs are as good as it gets. Nice to have all this gathered on a well presented 2 disc collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars What It Says On The Tin!, 5 Dec 2013
This review is from: The Complete 62 Sessions (Audio CD)
Living up to its title in every respect, this represents the King in his myth-shrouded prime when all fans saw of him was in movies. Yet, now and then, the more sensitive might catch a glimpse behind the artifice. For example, precisely one minute into `Song Of The Shrimp' (in Girls! Girls! Girls!), a glared split-second mingling of exasperation, distaste and resignation ensnares perhaps his true feelings about the infantile pathos of the lyrics (though it's an eternal favourite for the more perverse Presley consumer).
There are two versions of this ditty on two-CDs containing much to study with regard to the vinyl and film edits of given items, and the reprising of vocal highlights as incidental music. This is instanced by the `King Of The Whole Wide World' on the Kid Galahad EP being longer than on screen, and the recycling of Follow That Dream`s `Angel' as a brief instrumental.
Just as episodic in the same flick are two songs deemed to be `traditional', thus enabling Elvis to cream off royalties. He benefitted more worthily from co-writing `That's Someone You'll Never Forget', the finale of Pot Luck - and, arguably, his most profound artistic statement during this period.
