It has been a long time since I had such pure enjoyment/nostalgia from a Double bill, but here Columbia have released 2 classic films of the 50's. Classic not in the sense of a major Motion Picture, but in two that reflected the mood and music of the time. Both films are excellent B/W 16.9 Ratio with excellent sound. No extras, but I'm not complaining. ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK is just magic. Directed by of all people Fred F.Sears (Durango Kid and assorted "B"s) with huge gusto and brilliantly choreographed by Earl barton, the film seems to fly by. Obviously the music is vital and here we do have the greats and some forgotten ones too. Haley's "Rudy's Rock" was the musical highlight for me. But it's the dancing/jiving that really got me. Lisa Gaye (sister of Debra Paget for those who care about these things) looks stunning in short shorts and dances up a real storm with Earl Barton. Her romance with Johnny Johnstone tho is a bit "yuck". A terrific treat. DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK was for me just as good tho sadly without Lisa. Excellent picture and sound and haley and his Comets and LITTLE RICHARD!! His 2 numbers are "Long Tall Sally" and "Tutti Frutti" and his band rocks tho he didn't look too happy I must admit. Glorious exhuberant dancing/Jiving again and ther alswo a marvellous "Charlston" again choreographed by Barton. The romance element is awful and Alan Dale must be the smarmiest most unatractive rock singer/actor...Ever! But it all adds to the pleasure. Great songs, Great Dancing. No messin around. I loved the fact that there was none of the hysterical editing/cutting that dominates so many modern films. Here you can SEE the dances and the acts. I would love everyone to enjoy these films but I guess maybe they are for Rock n Roll lovers and nostalia lovers and people who are are, like me, of a "certain Age"?? Highly recomended.

I've been waiting for ages for "Rock Around The Clock" on region 2. This is a very crisp copy with excellent sound and picture. I can't believe though that "Don't Knock The Rock" was made by the same people. It's nowhere near as good.

Having lived through the era of rock n roll I remember clearly the old but brilliant films centered around the music of the time. Hopefully more will be released
