5.0 out of 5 stars A Big Step Forward, 12 Jun 2013

(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Dva (Audio CD)
I was more than a little bewitched by Emika's eponymous 2011 debut.
(Truth-be-told I remain somewhat intoxicated by its dark charms).
Take-two finds her exploring not dissimilar territory but there
is greater ambition here in a sonic palette which demonstrates
not only the legacy of her classical musical education but her
ability to employ what she has learned to create electronic soundscapes
of considerable depth, complexity and disturbing beauty. (The stunning
introductory piece 'Hush - Interlude' with its lush string arrangement
and the haunting voice of Michaela Sru quite took my breath away!)

There are a generous fifteen tracks in the set. From the powerful throbbing
beats of 'Young Minds'; through the quasi-Arabic bloops and blips of 'She
Beats', with its deadpan Miss Kittin-ish vocals; the dreamy subterranean melody
of 'Primary Colours' (perhaps the project's finest moment) and the delightful
'Searching' (wherein Ms Emika comes as close as she has so-far in creating
something approximating a pop song and a jolly good one too!) we are struck
by her intuitive ability to keep both our minds and emotions fully engaged.

'DVA' represents a big step forward in Emika's musical journey. Bravo indeed!

Highly Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars CD great, live is even better!, 18 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dva (Audio CD)
Having had the chance to see Emika perform selections from DVA, the live performances are very dynamic and the album makes a good second-best if you can't get to see her in person in my opinion. Not often seen in the UK, the USA, Poland, France and Russia seem to be her main haunts.

Her stage act is heavily choreographed as well now for this second album, something not obvious from the CD. Her vinyl record album version which has a double-sided sleeve seems to be in demand for autographing.

I received a free copy of the CD but not in return for writing this review.
