4.0 out of 5 stars Set the Americana button to stun!
This record is an audiophile's dream - the recording is absolutely superb, clear class A detail and space. Even on the worst stereo in my house it sounds like the musicians are in the room with you. This was my main reason for buying the record, after hearing the quality of the opening track, so I must confess I'm only casually familiar with Frissel's music, although I...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I've seen several of Bill Frisell's live gigs over the years and have always admired him but I've always found his recorded work to be disappointing. This is no exception. Some of the tracks are promising but don't go anywhere. Its all very pleasant, its recorded well and it sounds "nice" but it is really rather bland. Frisell's country and western roots emerge...

This record is an audiophile's dream - the recording is absolutely superb, clear class A detail and space. Even on the worst stereo in my house it sounds like the musicians are in the room with you. This was my main reason for buying the record, after hearing the quality of the opening track, so I must confess I'm only casually familiar with Frissel's music, although I will certainly be buying more.

The music is a playful, intricate and often challenging exploration of American themes, textures and structures - so it veers from elegiac, pastoral elegance to surf bops, blues and layers of grunge mixed with old-timey strings. You can picture wide expanses of American landscape, visions of the prairie and a bustling sense of progression. The combination of the strings and Frissel's ultra-cool guitar is an interesting one, although I found the lack of a bass instrument hard to get used to at first, despite the fact that it lends the music a sense of space and 'old, weird' mystery. There are dominant musical themes which are repeated, tying the whole set together effectively and these are complicated with characteristically surprising twists and turns.

The packaging - with a beautiful bridge photo and cool artwork - deserved to be printed on less-tacky paper, its really glossy and horrible!

Frisell's country and western roots emerge throughout here. I start thinking why am I listening to this. I'd describe it as music to go to sleep to. I know what a great guitarist he is and I really want to like it but simply can not.

..and makes room for more music !. Bill gets involved in so many projects with so many people , that even his springs of creativity must need refreshing every so often .His recent trip to Big Sur , that iconic landscape of Kerouac and Snyder , has done the trick .This is the freshest I've heard him sound in a while , still within a largely pastoral / tradititional area , and it has the feel of something that will grow with more listenings .Maybe Bill will get on a run of exploring musically Kerouac and Snyder,s poetry , now that would be interesting . Be bop Zen/ Shinto /Whitman/ Thoreau...

Bill Frisell certainly 'does justice' to California with this beautifully played soundscape. A CD that tugs at the heartstrings and memories of any visitor or lover of the Golden State. Superb in every 'Bill Frisell' way!
