I'll cut to the chase. The character's are likeable and the plot idea was good. The authors decision to fill a quarter of the total volume of the book with what the detectives were eating and were going to eat was pointless and by the end of the book was irritating. You wouldn't mind if there was a reason for it but there clearly wasn't one!
By the end I was left annoyed that the so called detectives were more bothered about their next meals than solving the murder of their mentor.

This is really very uneven. The basic idea is a good one, and, though it's a bit slow to start, once things get going it peps up quite nicely. As others have said, though, there's an awful lot about meals and eating, none of which is relevant. Pruning and focussing needed!

I've finished it with a smile as it was indeed an entertaining cosy mystery. I like stories where the main characters are older folk and to my mind the story flowed well. I loved all the food talk unlike some reviewers. What's wrong with a side dish of irrelevent banter and culinary descriptions about their meals since both of our characters love to eat? And yes in my mind's eye they were probably rather rotund and unattractive, but not that unusual. I suppose it's safe to say they chomped their way through this mystery to find the killer of their friend The Colonel, when it looked impossible that someone could get in and out of the premises without being detected yet leave The Colonel dead in a room locked from the inside. In this story I really connected with the sleuths and praised their attention to detail. I was also pleasantly surprised at the ending which was quite clever. I thought several times that I could identify the killer but I was thankfully wrong. I can't praise the author too highly and I'm encouraged to read their other works. The editing needs work though.

Although I quite enjoyed reading this book it was a little light hearted . A little like a book version of cluedo.

I am afraid this book concentrates too much on irrelevant issues, such as what the detectives are eating all the time, comedy etc. I prefer my murder mysteries to be suspensful and interesting rather than funny and laborious, so I had to give up after a while and did not finish this book. Maybe other readers who enjoy light hearted comedy will appreciate this more, but it is definitely not for me.

This is the first Dekker Mystery I've read, finding it through a Facebook page. I loved it, and I wasn't given the impression I missed something coming in at book 3. I will definitely be looking out for Steve Demaree books in the future, because it was well thought out and well written.

Has to be one of the worst books I've ever read. The story follows two overweight detectives who spend most of their time...and most of the book...eating! The story itself is badly written and doesn't flow. The plot is poor and simply ridiculous.

Ok really liked this book it was personal for both detectives and as usual there is humour. I do think though that we could do without all the information about their eating habits.

I quite enjoyed this but it was a bit slow. There was a bit too much about the pair investigating which detracted from the story - it was a bit unnecessary but harmless! Still a reasonable mystery once you got past that.
