Quite Possibly The Best Game Ever
on 14 December 2014
This is simply the best "game" I have ever played. I picked it up as it came as a recommendation after buying a few of the Kinect dance games (to get fit). Anyway, I bought a Les Paul look-a-like in sunburst a few years ago, just to have on a stand in the living room as it looks cool. I never really got the hang of playing it, but really liked the idea of being able to. I am more a piano man...mainly because of Billy Joel and Freddie Mercury. The main drawback I had with guitars was getting past that pain barrier of toughening the fingertips on your left hand fretting the strings...which I always used as an excuse to give up.
Not now. Now it's an annoyance that stops me playing for longer!
The interface is simple to use, and the lessons are thorough. The artificial intelligence is perfectly judged, as whenever I struggle with a riff, it automatically repeats it for me, and if I still don't get it, it slows it down until I do. Very clever.
I haven't heard of half the songs on here, but in honesty it doesn't really matter. There will be some you know, and playing the others is excellent practice...it has helped me discover my love of music again. About 5 days after getting this, I also got the first version too...the interface isn't as good and there are not as many techniques included, but I really wanted it for the songs (Franz Ferdinand, Take Me Out). There is a licensing issue, which means you have to pay an additional fee to import the original RS songs to RS 2014 (£6.95), but you then have access to around 100 songs...all upgraded with the latest 2014 bells and whistles. There is also a good amount of DLC (downloadable content) available, which works out to just under £3.00 a song, or a little less if you buy a "pack".
You may think that this will not teach you to play properly, but I have been at it for just over a week now, and I can pick up the guitar without the game and play the practice lesson riffs without looking. I also found that a few of them sounded a little like other famous riffs...and within a few minutes I can work out what I need to change and play them too. I am convinced that this WILL make you a guitarist.
All in all, the best money I have ever spent on a game. If you have an electric guitar lying around, dust it off and get RS 2014. It is amazing.
