4.0 out of 5 stars A contrasted coupling., 5 July 2013

Of the two films in this package "Death Goes To School" is for me in a class of its own (pun partially intentional!). Set in a private girl's school, where murder has been done to one of the mistresses (teachers if you prefer), the measured investigations carried out by the ever engaging Gordon Jackson leaves one in suspense almost to the final minutes. In addition to Jackson himself the casting is first rate with each and every part played to natural perfection.

"Night Of The Prowler" has its moments but the outcome was rather predictable from early on in the film. The one great bonus is to have more than just two words out of the ubiquitous, so-called character actress Marianne Stone. Here not only may you have her voice to savour but also some indication of her slender, voluptuous figure. (Compare to her fleeting appearance towards the end of "I'm All Right Jack" with Sellers et al.)

I have been quite exacting with my assessment of the picture and sound quality of DVDs in the past and was hoping this double bill would be of good quality and I am happy to say both are excellent. The films are a complete contrast. Both feature some of my own favourite actors & actresses. Gordon Jackson; Barbara Murray & Beatrice Varley are perfect in their roles and Pamela Alan is excellent as the nasty piece of work she portrays.
Patrick Holt is the baddie for once and plays the role very well. This Butchers production packs plenty of action into its just under an hours running time. Some nice locations in both films. Well done to Renown and I look forward to this technical standard being maintained. Pricewise excellent value and the tip always pre order to save cash.

If they keep this up I will soon have more Renown Releases than Warner Archives. This is a fascinating Double Bill. DEATH...is a 1952 release and in all honsty7 is pretty slow, but interesting and in the end a satisfying viewing. The accents are all cut glass, as indeed they could have been at a very staid Private Girl's school where this is set. The acting is, well, interesting (sorry to use that word again, but it is appropriate), and the denoument whilst not exactly nail biting is well handled. Gordon Jackson turns in a very good performence as the rather dour Scottish Scotland Yard man, and you can see why Barabara Murray went on to bigger and better work. A different kind of film and recomended. NIGHT OF THE PROWLER is perhaps the more familiar of the two, having been on TV I am sure within living memory. It is also the film I prefer. Who could resist the "Night Club" setting and Benny Lee (!) singing "Let's Kick it Around" and then being a waiter. What serious pleasure all us fans of Marianne Stone will get...Towards the end you see what a slim, and, I will say it, attractive actress she was, perhaps a fan club is called for - I digress. This is a straightforward, 59 min crime/murder mystery, tho experts will guess the ending. Acted as well as can be expected, I again recomend it. Both prints, picture and sound are very good and the price is right. Keep going Renown.

Decided to buy these as I like Gordon Jackson and was not disappointed. A good thriller despite being a 'B' film
