This review is from: Mickey Jupp - Live At Rockpalast (DVD & CD) [1979] [NTSC] (Audio CD)
As a LONG-time fan of Mickey Jupp, first turned on many many years ago by his two STIFF Records releases (JUPPANESE, Mickey Jupp's LEGEND), when I saw the imminent release of a a live DVD, filmed at Rockpalast no less, I immediately pre-ordered. Released by Germany's usually top-notch Repertoire Records, the set is packaged in a nice slipcased digipak with a CD of the show and an informative booklet. The sound quality is "OK," but you have to remember this was a live TV concert from 1979, with that in mind Repertoire did the best they could. The musicians in his band make an impressive roster, Dave Mattacks (FAIRPORT CONVENTION) on drums, Pat Donaldson (RICHARD THOMPSON) on bass , Ian Duck (HOOKFOOT) on guitar and Frank Mead (GARRY MOORE) on alto sax & harp. Jupp adds guitar and keyboards beside his vocal duties. They perform fourteen songs, nine of his own compositions, and five classics (tracks listed below). If it seems that I'm taking a circuitous route to reviewing the performance it's only because I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings. For whatever reason, fatigue?, illness?, over-indulgence?, ennui?, whatever, Jupp seems to sleepwalk through the show as if he's on auto-pilot, his voice is strained and weak and his playing is lethargic as well. The musicians are game, but also seem to be thrown off by their leader's lack of drive. Things pick up somewhat as they go along, but not enough to salvage this viewer's disappointment. For a more rounded view of this (usually) great musician and songwriter, pick up the above mentioned JUPPANESE and Repertoire's newly reissued CDs of the great LONG DISTANCE ROMANCER and the excellent long-lost classic OXFORD that was originally released on LP in Germany only. The LEGEND compilation has never made it to CD, but Repertoire have reissued their three albums on CD in nice digipaks over the past years, their debut, originally on Bell Records LEGEND, and their 2nd and 3rd on Vertigo, LEGEND (2nd aka RED BOOT) and MOONSHINE. All, especially #2 and #3, are basically Mickey Jupp albums. After LEGEND's demise, their drummer Bill Fifield was hired by Marc Bolan when he was electrifying T. REX. Bolan didn't think "Fifield" fit the group, so he christened the chagrined drummer "Bill Legend." He ended up playing with T. REX until Bolan's tragic end. Some other fine Mickey Jupp albums include: AS THE YEAHS GO BY, SOME PEOPLE CAN'T DANCE and the new YOU SAY ROCK. Grab yourself a pint or a cuppa, cue up JUPPANESE or OXFORD and let Mickey atone for this rare misstep......

I'd only ever heard smidgens of Mickey Jupp before, having never listened to him in his heyday. I bought this out of curiosity. I've only played it once, but it was okay.
