Great voice, lacklustre album
on 12 March 2016
There's no denying that Gregory Porter has a very good voice but this album was much too bland for my liking. A lot of the material is rather dull and sounds very outdated, not something I'd want to listen to again. There's also a lot more jazz than what there is soul, and when I went and bought the CD, admittedly on a whim, I guess that I had expected more of the latter. Nevertheless, there are still some worthwhile tracks to be heard, but on a whole, I have to say that 'Liquid Spirit' is a rather lacklustre affair.
The jazzy title track is an upbeat number and an all around feel-good song, the warm and soulful 'Hey Laura' is the real highlight and I wish there was more like it on here, but 'Musical Genocide' is also excellent, as well as several others which are worth adding to a playlist.
Ultimately, I was left disappointed with 'Liquid Spirit' for the reasons already stated, but if you're a real fan of traditional jazz music, then by all means invest in it and enjoy.
