5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Basie, 14 Jun. 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Live At The Sands (Audio CD)
A mere 5 stars doesn't do justice to this fantastic CD. This is Count Basie's band blowing up a storm at the Sands Hotel, Las Vegas, in January 1966, where they "warmed up" the Vegas crowd prior to the arrival on stage of Frank Sinatra.
Seeing and hearing the Basie band in person was always a joy to behold, and I doubt if there is a better 'live' Basie record than this one. Thanks to the superb sonic quality, this is an electrifying audio treat that captures one of Basie's best bands at its peak. Close your eyes and you're transported to the front row of the Copa Room at the Sands Hotel.
The perfect companion disc to this CD is 'Sinatra at the Sands' which was recorded during the same engagement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basie in top form Vegas 1966, 15 Dec. 2008

A treat for anyone who has thrilled to the sound of the Basie band backing Frank Sinatra on their legendary 1966 Live at the Sands recording. Here's what they played before he came on. It says something for Sinatra's mystique that as you listen to this electrifying performance by the band you find yourself wondering what Frank was doing while they were playing: listening in on the show-relay or perhaps too busy up to no good somewhere.

The club ambiance is very lively throughout, quite different from a concert hall audience who would have considered talking while the band was playing the height of bad manners.

The set contains some of the great Basie standards of the period, all played with the usual razor-edge accuracy by the great musicians of the orchestra, with veteran rhythm guitarist Freddie Greene keeping faultless, rock-steady time as always.

Stunning - a must for Basie lovers

Excellent Basie. The band roar on this one, but then they always did. Good solo work from Lockjaw, Al Grey, and some nifty flute work from Eric Dixon on his composition Blues For ILean . Sure, this could be termed normal fare for the band but they were never guilty of resting on their laurels. And, that rhythm section......

Well worth the money, up to the usual Mobile Fidelity standards.
Stereo image is quite wide, so it is historically correct.
It is nice to see them still making Hybrid SACDs.
