2.0 out of 5 stars "Perfect formatting" - not true
I'm not going to talk about the books here - they speak for themselves and I imagine I'll pick them back up again every few years until I die.

However, this compendium is being advertised as having "perfect formatting", which is the opposite of my experience. The formatting is idiosyncratic at best. There are a number of typos, for instance. Names of...

I loved this as a girl and love it still as a grandmother. I can't wait to introduce this to my granddaughter as being the mother of sons it was not possible! A beautifully written story of times gone by.

I thought that this had been written for children but it seems I was mistaken as seen from an adult's perspective it makes fascinating reading. One experiences the emotions and tribulations of an orphan child adopted by an older couple yet empathise with their anxieties and joys.

Another childhood favourite and I had forgotten how comforting and entertaining the tales are. It must have shaped my growing up more than I realised at the time.

Names of boats are italicised but not capitalised, as they are in the print editions. Also, capslock is used for emphasis, and this should really, really be italics. It's also used inconsistently - words or phrases in English which are meant to be emphasised are put in all caps, but all caps is also used for words which were italicised in the original because they're in a foreign language - e.g. "ECLAT" (yeah, no accent either) in Anne of the Island. Which is extremely jarring when all caps is also used in the same sentence/page to confer emphasis, even though the foreign-language words aren't meant to be emphasised any more than the other words in the context of the sentence. It's not even consistent - these editions use italics in some places, all caps in others, but not in a way that gives the impression of actual editorial foresight/decision-making.

As someone who read print editions of these books at least yearly from the age of eight to the age of fourteen, and then every few years thereafter, I know exactly where the emphasis is meant to be placed and how everything should be properly formatted - these inconsistencies might be more acceptable to a newer reader, or someone with (let's face it) less emotional attachment to these books, but anyone who's very familiar with the print texts of these books will likely find that these editions offer a subtly unsatisfying reading experience.

I have already read quite a bit of this on my tablet but have only got 5% through the books. There is an awful lot of reading for very little money.

The books are well written and quite gripping.
