I wouldn't call it a shredder, more a 'mulcher' for example hedging freshly cut gets squeezed through the rollers and not 'shredded' however are a lot more pliable.

To start with using it resulted in jams every minute and no instructions to unjam [reversing doesn't un-jam anything]. Couple things that helped

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Work!
Yes, this thing is quiet as advertised, but it doesn't actually shred anything. Smaller twigs etc get slightly chewed and then clog up the outlet (even with the guard removed). Other than thicker 20mm plus diameter branches, all you get out of this product is the same as what you put in with a series of chew mark along its length.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs a bit of setting up, 19 April 2014

I wouldn't call it a shredder, more a 'mulcher' for example hedging freshly cut gets squeezed through the rollers and not 'shredded' however are a lot more pliable.

To start with using it resulted in jams every minute and no instructions to unjam [reversing doesn't un-jam anything]. Couple things that helped

1. Remove the safety guard at the bottom, it just causes jams.
2. Do not wear gloves as recommended, you cannot get your fingers down inside the mouth of the rollers, when it is running, with gloves on, also they are liable to get caught and pull your fingers in so unless you have access to children, normal small handed children and not the obese ones you sometimes see, don't wear gloves when prodding here.
3. In the end I took a saw and cut off the entire 'bucket' arrangement beneath rollers and have been basically jam free since then.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worx Silent Shredder, 2 Mar. 2014

This review is from: Worx WG401E 2500W Silent Shredder (DIY & Tools)
This machine appears to be well made solid construction. When I started using it the shredded material kept bunching up at the outlet stopping the shredded material falling in the bag, bringing the whole process to a stop. I realised that there is a grate by the outlet possibly for safety reasons stopping the shredded material passing through.. By loosening a single screw removed this grate and never looked back since.
My previous Bosch shredder, some hard piece of wood ripped plastic housing so some pieces passed through without being shredded, other pieces jammed in the slit blocking up the inlet making it very hard to remove. So it had to go.
This Worx shredder seems to work faultlessly so far only time will tell how reliable it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cleaner Garden..., 7 Dec. 2013

This review is from: Worx WG401E 2500W Silent Shredder (DIY & Tools)
Have only used item on a trial run 30 mins since receiving the Shredder, description right, Bloody Heavy, but easy to move around, did have a jam a couple of times, but could be my fault, possible over loading feeder, but reverse switch helped to clear cutters, and very silent when in operation, so you don't upset the neighbours, when in use for any long periods.....overall good solid product on first meeting...came with a good length of cable....

5.0 out of 5 stars Best shredder ive ever owned, 17 Dec. 2013
This review is from: Worx WG401E 2500W Silent Shredder (DIY & Tools)
Ive used a varying assortment of makes and types of shredders in previous years so i thought id try something different. Ive owned this model shredder for around 4 years now as it was a cheaper alternative to a petrol powered unit, it isn't so much a shredder as a chipper. Other shredders on the market use a blade spun at high rpm to produce a fine mulch, this uses a gear driven wheel at slow rpm. This allows branches and greenery to be pulled through the shredder, no more pushing it through with a big stick.

The shredder has been used mostly to shred conifer and hedge cuttings. In fact it has shredded well over 20 ton of hedging, conifer and pyracantha in the last four years. The shredder cuts and mashes the wood branches and greenery of conifer enough to allow it to be broken down on a compost heap.

It can get clogged of the cutting blade becomes dull and the cutting plate is left slack, thus not cutting anything and binding itself up. Also the ends of the conifer branches which are think with green take a minute to go through the blade, just patience required.

This will shred things up to 40mm in dia but it must be green and soft. Woody branches i.e. dead conifer - 25mm max else it will jam but the reversible feature helps unjamming. The shredder is quite heavy and must be sat on level ground when being used. As it is self feeding it saves a lot of time as you can be collecting more greenery ready as the previous is being fed through.

Maintenance wise its easy, sharpen the cutting blade, clean out the cutting area and make sure the gearbox has a bit of fresh grease in it every now and then. All in all this is the easiest and best shredder i have ever used.

4.0 out of 5 stars well worth the investment, 10 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Worx WG401E 2500W Silent Shredder (DIY & Tools)
I got it out of the packaging, plugged it in and tried it out, It was useless, I thought what a waste of money and I read so many reviews etc before choosing, Then being a male instead of packing it back up and returning it I took it too bits to see how it worked! I thought what a great design it should work well. So I thought about it and looked again and realised the pressure plate wasn't adjusted up properly, so I re-assembled it and adjusted it up and now it works really well. Its an excellent piece of kit, if it keeps working this well it will have been an excellent investment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless, 16 April 2014
This review is from: Worx WG401E 2500W Silent Shredder (DIY & Tools)
Looks very robust coming out of the box. Easy to assemble, then the trouble starts. Completely useless. Material simply circulates round the so called cutting blades and ends up back in the hopper. Almost nothing comes out of the outlet below. Long woody stems go through but don't get cut into pieces and you end up having to pull them through. Very heavy. Hard to believe they actually tested this machine before they put it on the market. Returned within 24 hours of first use with a great sigh of relief. Next time I will buy a proper one.
