5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......just beautiful
This film marks the end of an era for 3 of the main actors in this film, although Bette Davis did appear in one more film this was apparently her last film that she was to complete. This was to be the last film that both Lillian Gish, who looked great for for her age (92/93 at the time) and Ann Southern who was 78 at the time and also looked great for her age...

1.0 out of 5 stars Parcel arrived open, not happy.
Whole package arrived OPEN. Other DVD in pack sealed, but this one unsealed and disc loose rattling round. Amazon parcels always hard to open so this one had obviously been tampered with. Not at all happy, amazon failing or post office? Don't know.

This film marks the end of an era for 3 of the main actors in this film, although Bette Davis did appear in one more film this was apparently her last film that she was to complete. This was to be the last film that both Lillian Gish, who looked great for for her age (92/93 at the time) and Ann Southern who was 78 at the time and also looked great for her age.

There's also fine support from Vincent Price.

This is primarily about 2 elderly sisters (Bette and Lillian) who are both coming to the end of their long lives, they are both widows who have lived at their seaside cottage for the past 50 years, whilst one sister wants to embrace new and exciting things in life, the other is bitter and unwilling to embrace change.

Over the course of the film they begin to get closer to eachother and embrace their lives together, for now and the future.

This is a film with a good and strong heart, it's warm and easy going and is a joy to watch a group of legendary actors doing what they always did best, the last few shots in particular are very subtle and moving, as the screen fades to black so too do the two main characters long and successful careers and their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars For my mother - a film to treasure, 18 Jun 2007
I am dedicating this review to my dear late mother. She and I always loved to witness the quiet craftmanship of acting, directing and photography which unfold here.

Of course it is wonderful to see the thoughtful and totally convincing performances of the great actors, Lillian Gish and Bette Davis - however the quiet dignity of this work does not allow you to dwell on the performers as stars. From the opening moments when sepia gives way to colour - bringing us gently from past to present - this is a movie that captivates and enchants.

There is gentle humour and heart wrenching pathos in this little story - many memorable images are captured. Libby mourns her physical infirmities - Sarah takes strength from her little rituals - talking to the pictures of loved ones long departed.

The film is surely due a UK release on DVD - in the mean time catch it if you can at the National Film Theatre one day - or perhaps a repertory cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gentle, Watchable Film, 9 Jan 2014

Bought as a replacement for a VHS version. I am a Bette Davis fan so perhaps a little biased but this is a gentle film starring 3 excellent actors; Bette, Lilian Gish and Vincent Price all give sterling performances in what turned out to be the last film for two of them.

will become a double classic as the actors are already from the classic era of Hollywood and the story itself is timeless.
