5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice Laptop, 16 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 15.6-inch Laptop (Dusk Black) - (Intel Core i7 3630QM 2.4GHz Processor, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 16GB SSD, Blu-ray, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Nvidia Graphics, Windows 8) (Personal Computers)
I read many reviews of laptops in this price / specification range and eventually narrowed it down to the Y500. I wanted to use it mostly for Photoshop work and so purchased the version with 16Gb RAM. Photoshop starts up very quickly now compared to my previous HP which was getting a bit old in the tooth and working on photos is now so easy. The computer is very well made and the keyboard is very easy to use and the keys are well spaced. The touchpad is less easy to use and I would suggest anyone who buys this computer to invest in a separate mouse. The screen is excellent and the colours are extremenly vivid and sharp. I have the bluray drive and it is a pleasure to watch movies on this screen. The sound is also excellent and loud enough for most peoples needs. The battery life was quoted as only being for 3 (ish) hour, but I will be using it on mains power most of the time so its not really an issue. It is a little heavy, but it is what I expected. The 1TB hard drive means that I can store most of my current photos on it without worrying about running out of space. This series of laptops say that the drives (Ultrabay) can be swapped out and additional graphics cards, cooling fans (for gamers) or hard drives can be added, but it seems impossible to find anywhere that sells the Ultrabay products, Lenovo UK do not seems to sell them and even Leovo in the US don't advertise them as available.
So far I am very impressed with this laptop and have no regrets in purchasing it. It is perfect for gamers or someone looking to do Photoshop work, it is very fast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great laptop, very happy with it!, 1 Oct. 2014

This review is from: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 15.6-inch Laptop (Dusk Black) - (Intel Core i7 3630QM 2.4GHz Processor, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 16GB SSD, Blu-ray, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Nvidia Graphics, Windows 8) (Personal Computers)
Very happy with the laptop! Had it for over a year now and see no problems with it... in fact, I noticed that the sound and picture quality on this laptop is considerably better than the small TV I bought recently. =P

Bought the laptop initially for scientific computing purposes, testing the CUDA-C++ language on multiple GPUs to speed up a hydrodynamic fluid flow solver. I wanted a new laptop and for the project needed multi-GPU capabilities, so was in the business for multi-GPU laptops, of which this was by far the best solution at the time. After much research and no guarantee that I could write code using the second GPU (which is inserted via the removable DVD player tray) I decided to just get it (as it looked so nice!) and managed to configure it with minimal problems to use both GPUs for more than just graphics. Also did not seem to encounter any problems like slow connectivity to the second GPU, memory transfers were as for the first GPU. Very very pleased with how the computer ran and how it served as a great platform for developing code before testing on a dedicated GPU-cluster.

Now using the laptop very casually just for watching movies and low level browsing... quite a waste of the laptops capabilities really! But it handles everything very well and is very nice to use. I guess everyone gets used to their laptop after a while, but I certainly enjoy the feel of everything on this laptop! Only problem people may have is with the battery life (<2 hours with the 2nd GPU in it, longer without it), but as this is clearly a desktop replacement, this should not be an issue. I'm sure it is usable on the go too, but I have no particular experience with this.

It said no scratches and there wasn't, it is very fast and all the functions work well. might consider putting a bigger msata drive in at a later date
