Way back in 1959 Penguin books published the original book of English Folk Songs compiled and edited by Ralph Vaughn Williams and A.L Lloyd and later in1960 A.L Lloyd recorded an LP and EP records with selections from that book. Those early recordings are available on CD by Fellside records England & Her Traditional Songs
Fifty two years later Penguin books issued a new updated version of the book The New Penguin book of English Folk songs in 2012. It was logical that Fellside records would follow on with a set of new recordings for the New Penguin book of English Folk Songs.
Here is a fabulous CD of music. Here we have a set of recordings from modern folk song interpreters. James Findlay, Bella Hardy, Brian Peters and Lucy Ward are all excellent performers who have had much success already in their own right.
The recording is a sister product of the actual book. The book and CD share the same art work. The book has twice as many folk songs as the original book and focuses on English Folk songs that were popular with country people between about 1870 and 1970. The CD represents a taste of these songs using a variety of Traditional interpretations of both aural and instrumental arrangements.
Instruments used are melodeon, anglo concertina, mandolin, guitar and fiddle Linda Adams and Andy shepherd also appear on the opening track chorus for "The Baffled knight (Blow the windy morning)"
There are good notes about each song used in the booklet and the album covers songs of love, sex, betrayal, murder and adventure on land and sea.
The sound is great with good balance and clarity and the performances are terrific,
This is a great release for anyone interested in English Folk songs and English Traditional music.
Also of interest is the book The New Penguin Book of English Folk SongsThe New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs by Roud, Steve, Bishop, Julia (2012)The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs
And why not check out another great CD that featured songs from the penguin book of English Folk songs also on Fellside records English Folk Songs which is a great CD that features the likes of Martin Carthy

Beautiful singing of traditional songs. I would definitely recommend this album. The artists bring the songs to life without losing the traditional feel.

Great folk album. If you love Traditional folk music you will love this. The songs are sung by modern folk artists but remain true to its roots. Therefore there is a lot of darkness here as well as truth. It is not for those who love twee singer songwriter stuff it has real heart and depth. If you like good gritty folk with no pretensions then listen to this.

I just had to get this disc. All the artists are the very best around today and the disc gives a good sample of the songs from the book. Highly recommended.
