5.0 out of 5 stars The Godly Are Not Good, 29 Mar. 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: God and His Demons (Hardcover)
For a relatively short book Parenti has compiled a substantial list of appalling behaviour directly caused by, or greatly facilitated by, organised religious structures. Direct, widespread and unavoidable evidence of what religiously inclined people do when put in positions of authority, or when systems exist to offer them protection and anonymity, is compelling if distressing reading.

The book isn't heavy-handedly promoting its own view (not that I'd mind), with simple praise for the virtues of secularism only, but in no uncertain terms points out the hypocritical, excessive, abusive and downright criminal acts allowed (and promoted) by religious structures.

Intriguing, disturbing, relentless and poignantly relevant. Wherever people reside on the belief spectrum, this is something they need to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shocking and witty, 10 July 2014

If you start reading this book as an agnostic, by the time you have finished it - after a few cynical laughs - you will be a complete athiest - or at least someone who has no time for organised religion at all! Very witty look at the huge failings of organised religion.

Excellent book my Michael Parenti, brilliant analyses, thought provoking.
Deserves to be next to Hitchens' God is not Great, and Dawkins The God Delusion.
Recommended!

Parenti is one of the few humans who bravely questions some unhealthy mainstream 'norm' that hold us in a state of falsehood! Full marks!!
