4.0 out of 5 stars Great music - pity about the recording, 27 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Macmillan: Tenebrae Responsories [Martin Baker, Westminster Cathedral Choir, London Brass] [Hyperion: CDA67970] (Audio CD)
Wonderful music brilliantly performed - but there seemed to be a problem with the recording. In several of the pieces there was a lack of balence betwen the choir and the brass ensemble and organ. The choir was barely audible unless the volume was turned up so high that the brass sections exceded the threshold of pain. It sounded as it it had been recording live in the cathedral without any microphones or whatever in the choir loft.

5.0 out of 5 stars MacMillans best album yet, 15 Aug. 2013
This review is from: Macmillan: Tenebrae Responsories [Martin Baker, Westminster Cathedral Choir, London Brass] [Hyperion: CDA67970] (Audio CD)
This album should be called the best of James MacMillan. Every track is a gem from beginning to end. Some of the tracks will really give your sub woofers a good work out. I've got quite a few MacMillan albums, but this is definitely the best.
