5.0 out of 5 stars An involving read
An old favourite, I was delighted to see this come out at last for Kindle. Long overdue. It has all the hallmarks of an involved detective novel hunting for the truth. It lays down the background and characters to the rest of the Alex Benedict series with some interesting differences that got ironed out in the later books. Any fan of Jack McDevit must read this one!

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather boring
A bit surprised at the good reviews as i found the whole book rather tedious and boring. I had to laugh at the authors invention of a new word, imagist. Certainly not in the english dictionary but i suppose maybe in the American one. Anyway if you want an exciting read this is not it.

As an Asimov fan, this was right up my street. Some lovely ideas in the book, and it's well paced. I read the entire series back to back on my e-reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars History SF Crossover, 12 Feb 2014
This review is from: A Talent for War: Alex Benedict - Book 1 (Kindle Edition)
This is a really successful attempt to blend history - except this is future history - mystery and science fiction. Under the guise of a mystery it covers future war, politics and the re-writing of history. Great characterisation and some very good edge of the seat moments.
I don't want to say anymore because it's hard to describe without giving away spoilers - but really if you ar an SF fan this is great stuff. Five stars!
Oh and best of all - its the start of a series that GETS BETTER. Incredible but true.

Two: warnings - DON'T READ the blurb. The blurb on mine gave away half the book. Do have a good memory for names: sometimes I'd forgotten who was who.

The first in the Alex Benedict series does a great job of introducing the character and gives a well-written space opera/mystery. The space-archaeology setting really fleshes out the setting and you get a real sense of history. Very enjoyable.

A whodunnit novel set against a background of "space". Don't expect interstellar wars in any detail. Excellent, well written, attention-keeping. Recommended.
