What could possibly go wrong; two college friends deciding to donate their bodies to the pursuit of science and beer money? Which is how Rob and Greg come to find themselves volunteering themselves as human pin-cushions for two weeks at the ultra-modern Pharmaceutical stronghold; ostensibly to test the efficacy of a prototype antihistamine in return for a few hundred dollars.

Shortly after arriving they are met by Nigel, who acts as their quasi tour-guide; a hyperactive and wild-eyed schtick like a latter day Brad Pitt in Twelve Monkeys, with a hint of Captain Sparrow thrown in. They then meet the rest of the inmates, sorry, volunteers a number of whom boast long-service awards as evidenced by trackmarks up their arms. As an aside, The Last Experiment does boast a decent cast who hold the film together well.

Of course it was never going to be an easy paycheck for them as they begin the course of injections; which begin to elicit 'interesting' side effects in the group; all closely monitored by the facility and easy-on-the-eye Dr Wilcox. What I quite liked about the film was that it didn't opt for the easy way out in attempting to emulate the excellent 28 Days Later, turning everyone into murderous savages; there was a lot more thought that went into the plot. Granted, it was never going to be a picnic but despite the 18 certificate it's rather restrained on the blood 'n' guts.

All told it's a decent and solid flick however I didn't feel it packed enough punch to nudge it into 4* territory.

4.0 out of 5 stars Value for Money, 10 April 2014

A good film. Value for money. Good storyline and acting. At last we have a relatively recent film which is worth watching. Numerous films have covered similar themes. This film covers the effect of scientific experiments and the desire by a group of College students and people eager to make a fast buck who later take part in such experiments with dire consequences.
