5.0 out of 5 stars A sophisticated camcorder that's a joy to use
The first thing I noticed about the LEGRIA HF R48 is how light and petit it is, it certainly won't give any arm ache when held for long periods of time. The handstrap is also padded, making it very comfortable to hold, and generally the camcorder has a reassuringly sturdy and solid feel to it.

The LEGRIA HF R48 is packed full of features but the learning curve...

5.0 out of 5 stars A sophisticated camcorder that's a joy to use, 24 Sep 2013
This review is from: Canon LEGRIA HF R48 High Definition Camcorder (3.28MP, 32x Optical Zoom, Wi-Fi Enabled with MP4 Support) 3 inch LCD (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The first thing I noticed about the LEGRIA HF R48 is how light and petit it is, it certainly won't give any arm ache when held for long periods of time. The handstrap is also padded, making it very comfortable to hold, and generally the camcorder has a reassuringly sturdy and solid feel to it.

The LEGRIA HF R48 is packed full of features but the learning curve is made much easier thanks to a fantastic touchscreen interface. Just tap the desired function on the screen to access the different options. The interface is also context-sensitive, so only the options relevant to the camcorder's current mode are available. The interface is superbly implemented and is very intuitive, normally I set aside some time to sit down and read through the manual but so far I've hardly needed it, which has been a pleasant surprise.

When filming I was very impressed with the quality of the HD recordings, the videos showed an incredible amount of detail and the colours were wonderfully bright and defined. Filming darker scenes was also very good, this has also been a bug bear of mine with previous camcorders, dark scenes always became very grainy, but the LEGRIA HF R48 managed to pickup a lot of detail in low light conditions.

Videos can be recorded in AVCHD or the more PC-friendly MP4 format, but a great feature is the ability to record video to both formats simultaneously, giving you the best of both worlds. Installing the free Movie Uploader app to the iPhone/iPad allows videos recorded on the LEGRIA HF R48 to be uploaded to YouTube and Facebook.

The LEGRIA HF R48 has built-in wi-fi, enabling it to be remote controlled, or for videos to be transferred directly to an iPhone or PC. Though for quick video transfer it's definitely better to connect the camcorder to a PC via the supplied USB cable.

Another nice touch is the 32Gb of built-in storage, this is a very generous amount and allows for quite long videos to be recorded without resorting to extra SD media cards. Plus it's very handy if you forget to pack an SD card!

The Canon LEGRIA HF R48 is a feature-packed camcorder that's extremely user friendly and produces superb quality HD images, this is an excellent value for money camcorder.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Canon Legria HF R48 is Rather Good, 24 Sep 2013

This review is from: Canon LEGRIA HF R48 High Definition Camcorder (3.28MP, 32x Optical Zoom, Wi-Fi Enabled with MP4 Support) 3 inch LCD (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Canon Legria HF R48 is a relatively `small' full HD camcorder. What you get is built-in 2.4GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi adaptor and 32GB of built-in storage for your videos. To supplement storage needs there is additional storage in the form of SD card slot, which combined, means you have a fairly large volume of storage at hand. The HF R48 has a very good user interface. This interface is very responsive touchscreen and is certainly an improvement over the user interface on the Canon Legria HF R36 (released 2012). Returning to the built-in Wi-Fi there is good cross platform connectivity as you can upload videos to your smartphone, tablet and stream to your smart TV. Via your router you can access the camcorder through your Pc/Mac; however, you'll need the HDMI output if you don't have a smart TV to connect too.

At about two hours operating time, the HF R48's battery life isn't too bad, either. There is very good image quality. The HF R48 offers the following connections Mini HDMI and Mini USB ports. However, for those people who need a microphone input there is none - which is sad as cheaper camcorder models seem to have this included in one form or another, I really cannot understand this omission. The Legria HF R48 is easy to hold and handle, which is due in part to the hand-strap's comfortable padding. Although light in weight, it does not seem to be cheaply made, the hinge, which attaches screen to camcorder body, feels firm and durable.

To sum up then the lack of a microphone input is a disappointment. However, the other positive aspects of this Camcorder make this a keenly priced product compared to its nearest rivals. This then makes HF R48 a rather good Buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little camcorder which produces some really vivid movies., 8 Oct 2013

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The camcorder itself is quite small and light so it does not tire you when using it. It is so simple to use as well with all the commands accessed via the simple to use touchscreen menus. It's great having 32gb of flash memory on hand as well as an SDXC card slot so you can basically record as much or as little as you want. The WiFi option for live streaming is also really useful for watching on tablets etc and works really well.

In use, the camcorder produces some really nice movies. Colours are really vivid and the image stabilizer works really well to keep shots shake free. It's not bad inside either or in darker environments, the CMOS sensor copes quite well and there is not too much grain which was quite impressive.

A few things that aren't that good though! The battery sticking out at the back doesn't look very nice. Also, the finger button to zoom in and out is too stiff for my liking. Because it's a bit stiff it sometimes makes you tilt the camera when you're using which is quite annoying. And finally, no microphone input is a bit of a bad omission.

All in all though, a really good camera that takes some really good looking movies ans that's the important part really and luckily it does this bit really well.

Purchased this as a step up from from my sd. toshiba. Took it on a tour of Europe this summer and it performed very well. Reasonably quick to start and focussing, whilst not instant, is acceptably quick. Light and with a very good battery life this is a bargain when you consider the good picture quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great HD Picture, 20 Nov 2013

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
We have been using camcorders for about twenty years now and the first thing you notice when comparing camcorders from the 1990s with modern ones today is the size and weight. Back in the 1990s it felt as though you had a brick in your hand. Go back further and the size was even larger, heavier and of course conspicuous.

This Canon LEGRIA HF R48 High Definition Camcorder is black and is really inconspicuous. You still hold it using a strap on your hand and the battery looks rather awkward sitting on the back. You still have to manually open the lens cover, which we found surprising and very annoying at times. When you swing out the LCD screen the camcorder comes on automatically and you get a great 3 inch screen, which you can touch operate.

But the main way that camcorders have changed over the years has nothing to do with their cosmetic appearance.

Early camcorders were really big, like their professional counterparts, the quality of the stuff you recorded was very different for consumer models. How many times we've gone out taken some video and then been very disappointed when viewing it at home. Even when video was recorded in digital format instead of tape, the quality left a lot to be desired.

The arrival of HD has completely revolutionised camcorders today. Yes you do still need to be discerning because we have used some pretty dodgy HD camcorders in the past year or so. This Canon LEGRIA HF R48 High Definition Camcorder though produces beautiful video - trust us when we say that the quality produced by this HD camcorder will simply blow you away: stunning stuff!

Back in the 1990s when you took some video the battery lasted only 15-20 minutes and then everything went black, sometimes with little or no warning. We had to take three or four batteries with us when wanting to record a special event, like a wedding or an anniversary etc, just in case. The battery on this Canon LEGRIA HF R48 High Definition Camcorder lasts for a long time and you find that the LCD display shows an estimate of how long the battery is going to last - which is a great touch.

But one word of warning regarding batteries for some reason Canon charge an astronomical amount for replacement/spare batteries. We would never go for a cheaper alternative, worried that it would damage the camcorder but wonder why genuine ones are so costly?

So if you are looking for a reasonably priced HD camcorder that can produce genuinely outstanding HD video then you cannot go wrong with this Canon LEGRIA HF R48 High Definition Camcorder. Just watch out for those costly batteries, they do seem excessively expensive.
