4.0 out of 5 stars More of this, please!, 3 Dec. 2010

This second volume of the Hammer and the Cross trilogy does not induce as much enchantment and wonder as the first one, but compensates this by taking the reader head over heels into a very plausible and realistic early Middle Age environment. Compelling from the first until the last page, I couldn't stop reading.
A very good sequel and it made me cry out for more. Good that it's part of a trilogy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Part Two of the alternative European Early Middle Ages, 10 Mar. 2015

This review is from: One King's Way (Hammer and the Cross Book 2) (Kindle Edition)
The second book in Harrison's "Hammer and the Cross" trilogy follows the first by combining history and legend to produce an interesting counterfactual history of the Early Middle Ages. Heathenism has defeated Christianity and checked the spread of the new religion, but the murder of a Pope and the establishment of a new order of Christian Knights provides a challenge for the followers of the Nordic Gods and Goddesses. Shef, the new King of North England, is taken by his various adventures to Norway and Sweden where it is realized he is the One King by their inhabitants. Meanwhile the Heathens technological discoveries far outstrip those of their enemies and the scene is set for a final show-down between the old and the new religions. Not quite as good as book one but still a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Part of the thought provoking Anglo Saxon/Viking trilogy, 18 Aug. 2013

A great book , all three books make compulsive reading. I already had the other two books so finding this one was fantastic. The book came very quickly and was in pretty good condition.

I enjoyed reading them all again and would recommend them to anyone who has enjoyed the Bernard Cornwell Warlord trilogy or his tales of Utred and Alfred the great.
