Sofia the First Talking Amulet
on 28 July 2013
My six year old daughter is a great fan of Sofia the First and she really wanted this Magical Amulet. There are good points and bad about this toy. On the plus side it has a nice case for the cards which your child has to insert into the Amulet to receive words of wisdom about being a successful princess, which stops them getting lost. The Amulet itself looks nice, although it is large and heavy. So, although it is good for dressing up pretend play, it is not something your child could wear for a long time. As well as being heavy, the clasp is not easy to open or close and my daughter could not fasten it on her own. However, that is often the case. The problem really comes in using the toy, or inserting the cards themselves. My daughter is six and was able to operate the toy on her own, but the instructions say that if the cards are bent, or something else incorrectly inserted into the amulet, then it may not work. The cards are quite fiddly and my daughter often had to push them further in, before they engaged and you heard the voice. I do feel that the toy is most appropriate for 4+ at the youngest; for smaller children attempting to jam the cards in would easily bend them. Also, the play value is quite limited. I noticed that my daughter and her friend had resorted to the 'try me' function when playing with it, so it would 'talk' without using the cards. So, if your daughter is a big fan, then she may like it, but I found it had novelty value but did not engage her attention for long.
