I was looking for a Bluetooth speaker with well-defined sound, good bass and decent portability. As there are so many products out there with so many audio signatures, you need to personally listen to their sound before you decide what's best for you.
After testing various products, I was hesitating between Sony SRS-BTX500, BOSE SoundLink II and Jawbone Big JamBox. I went for the Sony BTX500, which is louder than the other two, has strong bass and splendid sound. It has a sleek design which ups the style of any furniture it's on. The lights give it a subtle appearance. It is easy to move around the house and to carry with you in a backpack, having a nice (large) book like feel. Also, the product is more honest, as you get more details about its specifications, allowing you to compare it with others. It has extra features such as the speakerphone, NFC connectivity, USB charging exit, 3 sounds options, etc.
(The Bose if smaller and less heavy but its sound is easily submerged in the party chatter. The BOSE feels greedy, as the specs are hidden (so you don't know what you're actually getting) and it offers fewer features for a higher price. The JamBox feels just like a brick and its sound is less convincing.)
The annoying thing with the BTX500 is that the on/off button on the side doesn't stop the Bluetooth connectivity (and led). The complete shutdown button is less accessible on the back side.
Just to clarify, if you want heart stopping bass, you won't get it from any portable speakers, no matter what their marketing team promises you. Just test them and you'll see that only the massive speakers can make your windows tremble!

Amazing sound, perfect for a teenage boy's bedroom. Great product for the price.
If I had to mention anything negative, my son has said that it could be a bit louder - but he's a 16 year old so he would say that wouldn't he? It appears loud enough for our house - even with the door to his bedroom closed!
He's really pleased with it overall.
