5.0 out of 5 stars Gleeful tribute to an under-appreciated genius, 26 Mar 2013

This review is from: Pump It Up: Elvis Costello's 100 Best Songs (Kindle Edition)
Elvis Costello, one of the greatest songwriters of the rock era - as great as Dylan, Bowie, The Stones and The Beatles (so much so that Paul McCartney invited Costello to write with him) - gets a heartfelt celebration here from someone who clearly loves music and loves Elvis.

A hundred of the great man's thrillingly melodic, lyrically fascinating songs have been held up to the light and marvelled at - all by a man who writes with such skill that you either want to listen to the songs again, or find out what all the fuss is about if you don't know them already.

And Beviglia doesn't just single out Elvis for praise - with a few deft phrases he conjures up the vital contributions of Elvis's musical cohorts, the mighty Attractions, and other collaborators, with descriptions so vivid that you feel as though you're listening to the songs afresh as you read.

If you're curious about Elvis, this book could be the tipping point into lifelong fandom. If you love him already, there's a lot to argue about - how on earth could Beviglia leave out your Costello favourites?!

If you love the rock era, you have to have an informed opinion on Costello. This could be your cheat sheet - but I hope it'll be your introduction to one of the true masters: you can't afford to love music and miss out on the great and glorious body of work that is the Elvis Costello songbook.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-structured and well-argued list, 25 Mar 2013
This review is from: Pump It Up: Elvis Costello's 100 Best Songs (Kindle Edition)
Being a huge fan of Costello myself, I thought I would give this list a read to see how far I agreed, and disagreed, with the author's choices. There are some surprising inclusions and some hidden gems in this list that I would not have thought of. Generally I would have picked a similar selection, but it is written in such a convincing and genuine way, that even when I differ in opinion, I still respected the author's choices. He does not try to dictate but merely to share a love for Costello's music, and it has definitely inspired me to pick back up my old albums to give them a listen again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and convincing, 26 Mar 2013
This review is from: Pump It Up: Elvis Costello's 100 Best Songs (Kindle Edition)
An analysis of 100 songs in one book could become tedious and repetitive, but Beviglia knows how to write in a concise manner - giving a snippet of information about each of the tracks without over-loading you with waffle and long-winded opinions. This was a great, comprehensive overview of Costello's work and a must-read for all serious Costello fans out there.
