5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, lots of illustration. Great value!
Beautiful book and a great price! More illustrations than you get in most books like this these days which is great to see. An easy to use book that you can look at in chronological order or by place name if you're visiting somewhere specific and want to know more. I bought this as a gift for my parents who love it as they love visiting places of interest in England. A...

3.0 out of 5 stars too big a subject?
This is an ambitious book but I'm afraid that for me it does not quite live up to its ambition. The range of scholarship is wide, but inevitably there are big gaps and too many examples that are not necessarily helpful. 3.0 out of 5 stars too big a subject?, 9 Feb 2014

This is an ambitious book but I'm afraid that for me it does not quite live up to its ambition. The range of scholarship is wide, but inevitably there are big gaps and too many examples that are not necessarily helpful. For example, he talks about the Brighton Pavilion without mentioning Sezincote - indeed he says that hardly any country houses were built around 1800. A lot of the illustrations are too small to be much use, and there are quite a few typos.

The book is worthy enough, but it falls between being scholarly and being a good introduction for the general reader.
