versus
3.0 out of 5 stars Twelve Years a slave.
Interesting, but a bit bland.Perhaps I was expecting too much, after all the Hollywood hype, but certainly the picture he paints of the different types of plantations/owners/overseers,etc is frightening.
Also the diversity between the Southern states, then the USA as a whole,is an eye=opener.
However,I had just finished reading "Roots" again, after about 30...

I bought the book to read Twelve Years a Slave but was completely overwhelmed by the other accounts, particularly Uncle Tom's Cabin. The phrase 'Uncle Tom' has become such a form of disrespect that it had never occurred to me to seek out the source material. Having read it, I can see why this book galvanised people into fighting a war against slavery. It is a pitch perfect rendering of both sides of the argument (as much as there can be 2 sides to an argument about slavery) with the most inspiring array of characters. My heart was in my mouth as I read each chapter and the intensity of the threat towards each character increased then settled then increased again. This book should be compulsory GCSE material and I urge people to take every opportunity to read all the accounts contained here.

This is a bundle of books each dealing with 19th century slavery. Having seen the film I rushed out to purchase the book "12 Years a Slave" and was delighted to receive the extra titles. I had not read "Uncle Tom's Cabin" since I was at school, and now realise we only read an abridged version back then.

An appalling story of a free man who was tricked and sold into slavery. Very detailed description of the miserable lives that slaves led and the despair that they felt. To think that slavery persists today in some parts of the world is shocking!

You can tell by the title that there is a happy ending but I hope that everyone connected with slavery as a descendent of a slave owner or dealer, and there must perforce be many in the USA plus the British, French and Dutch traders, reads this book and feels guilt for what their forebears did.

Having watched the film felt that the biography would be more detailed. It is.
Super style and horrific description of inhumane treatment.

Great value to have so many first hand accounts of slavery and it's dehumanising effects. By reading these accounts you are transported to another time and you wonder how we overcome these hardships.

This is a brilliant read. The film does not do this book the justice it deserves. It's written by the character and he presents an enlightening account of his experiences as a slave, some of which left him with fond memories.....believe it or not......and this highlights the film to have cherry picked only the atrocities. It's a must read and an education.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, five excellent books in one, kept me going all week., 4 Jun 2014

The different books make me feel I have a good all round view of the experiences of the slaves lives. Their lives are reported without melodrama and really create an understanding of this awful 'trade'.

Very moving story, very honest and humble story of Solomon Northups life by the man himself. I watched the film first and then the book straight afterwards. Both were amazing

Twelve Years a Slave is a old book from the 1850s which has a fresh style about it, and the language is nowhere near as intricate as some British writers of the time. It is short and readable and the story is apt to make a tear come into the eyes. It is a tale of man's inhumanity to man. How could so called Christian men subject their fellow Man to such ignoble treatment and belive the Bible justifies it. God is surely made up my Man, or men who want power over the weak and vulnerable and ignorant. This book helos to prove this.
