4.0 out of 5 stars One of Hammer's finest achievements - but not a great DVD
Brides of Dracula was the first of Hammer's many sequels to their breakthrough hit, and it's not just the best of the series but one of their very best pictures. There's no Christopher Lee this time round - in fact, there's no Dracula at all - but there's a lot of imagination at play here in a beautifully plotted story that sees Peter Cushing's Van Helsing coming up...

2.0 out of 5 stars Cropping of original ratio ruins Blu-ray release
Brides of Dracula is among my favourite Hammer films and it also is one of their most beautiful looking, with Terence Fisher at the height of his powers of crafting stylish films on a small budget. Brides of Dracula has a unique fairy tale look with castles bathed in candy colour lighting and I'm certain that this film was the main inspiration of Polanski's stylish Hammer...

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, 17 Oct 2013
This review is from: The Brides Of Dracula (Blu-ray + DVD) [1960] (Blu-ray)
Picture quality not as good as the dvd release by Universal several years earlier (a little grainy)
but the overall presentation is pretty good especially the surviving crew members of Hammer back story on the making of the movie

4.0 out of 5 stars I think the blu-ray looks terrific..., 5 Sep 2013

Yes, I realize I am going against the grain (pun intended) of all the reviewers here but I just put the Brides of Dracula blu-ray up on my 120" screen and its looks superb. I cannot comment knowledgeably on the aspect ratio but if it was supposed to be 1.67:1 or something similar then I will add that I, too, prefer to have the films correctly shown. Nevertheless, this print is extremely good, great contrast, deep blacks, rich colors and fine detail. Few if any speckles, no lines and virtually no dirt. Forget about gripes over film grain. The grain on this print is normal for films of this age (with the exception of some early blockbusters filmed in 70mm that have much less apparent grain). I would much prefer this type of presentation than one in which the grain has been mercilessly scrubbed out. In short, the grain was no distraction at all for me. In terms of sheer picture quality, this is one of the best Hammer releases yet on blu-ray and I have them all. It is better than (Horror of) Dracula and Dracula: Prince of Darkness. Audio was also very good. I would be quite happy if Final Cut continues to put out the Hammer films if they look this good (but correct aspect ratio is always preferred). I don't know what the upcoming release schedule is but let me put my request in for some films that currently look quite poor on DVD. These include the last two Christopher Lee Draculas and the Hound of the Baskervilles with both Lee and Cushing. That last one isn't even in an anamorphic release AFAIK. Keep 'em coming Hammer - I'm still with you. (I took one star off the rating because very few things in life are perfect.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good/OK quality print....Film a disappointment, 29 Sep 2013

As above.....The film I thought was one of the better hammer films, until I watched it again...The 1st 30mins without P Cushing is flat, then it never realy gets going. The film is shot with lovely look. The transfer is OK....Not as good as Plague of The zombies re issue, but MUCH better than Dracula Prince Of Darkeness. re issue ....

It is a total sham that 'Hollywood Classics' can get away with selling something which this is clearly not. For crying out loud, this bluray even has a 'hair in the gate' in one of the earlier scenes (top left hand corner). Its appalling. The film itself is classic Hammer at it's very best, but is let down with this awful transfer. Actually, the picture is so 'Matty' you think you're watching a cartoon (!) There is no excuse. I have films older than this which has been cleaned up for bluray & they are immaculate. The companies knocking out previous Hammer titles (Lionsgate & Studiocanal) have done 'near' to perfect jobs (with the exception of Curse Of Frankenstein - Sorry Lionsgate, but you could of, & should of done better). There are extras on this bluray in the shape of a short 'Making Of', but compared to the previous Making Of's its all a little lack lustre, with a conversation (i.e Pete Cushing's dress code) appearing here & in Evil Of Frankenstein (Also a Hollywood Classic release). I have read several reviews with regards to Brides Of Dracula & am appalled how people can give this version 5 stars without even seeing the finished result! They read "Oh, I can't wait for the release...it should be good" (or words to that affect). Please, fellow Reviewer's, write on the finished product that you have bought, not on what you hope it'll look like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Film, 1 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this with Hammer's "The Evil Of Frankenstein" and it was a real pleasure viewing this Hammer horror which, even though Christopher Lee does not appear, makes a great Dracula film.

I really think this transfer is very good. I have the region 1 DVD and this blu-ray transfer is better. The colors pop out at you and they have the brightness level perfect. I think the DVD was too bright. Yes there is grain but it does not distort the image. I would have preferred the 1:66 aspect ratio but that was destroyed in the Universal fire. The 2:1 aspect ratio I think looks good and I am very happy to have this on blu-ray.

No Dracula, but his descendents live on. Peter Cushing as a frail Van Helsing ducks to avoid the rubber bats!
