It's wonderful to see this album given a new lease of life - I have long loved all of Millie's Jive recordings, of which this was the first. Millie's singing is up there with the greatest ever and the material is very appealing, with an 80s soul sound, very bright and cheerful, against which the vocals range from colourful to plangent to touching - but never less than thrilling! My favourite track is Hot! Wild! Unrestricted! Crazy Love, which exists in a live version on Back to the S***. You need to hear both versions, but this studio one is an absolute classic. The last track, I Fell In Love, finishes the album on an equally high note, if slightly rueful ... Millie, like all great artists, always has an element of surprise.

MILLIE JACKSON is one of the most infamous and well loved artists on the International soul scene. A highly respected performer who has garnered many plaudits and awards in the long career. Well known for her explicit and raunchy lyrics, she is never one to "hold back".
This 1986 album which she released dueing her time at JIVE RECORDS is a somewhat subdued affair, but a fine soul album none the less. There is very little of the trademark "Jackson raunch", but we do get a glimpse of her more subdued and tender side, which is very pleasant on the ear. the albums contains some modern soul gems inclusing the hit singles "Love is a Dangerous Game" & the funky "Wanna be your lover". The title track is a heartfelt and soulful affair.

This 1986 album opens with the subdued and soulful Hot! Wild! Unrestricted! Crazy Love which is followed by Millie's version of Prince's Wanna Be Your Lover, a slow but funky treatment with lovely saxophone. The tender ballad Love Is A Dangerous Game To Play is followed by the title track, a moving torch song.

The pace picks up on Mind Over Matter, a bubbly slice of R&B with shifting rhythmic paterns. Millie's famous sense of humour surfaces on It's A Thang with its tongue in cheek criticism of brands and labels. The next, I Need To Be By Myself, is another slow track about love and relationships and the album concludes with the tender ballad I Fell In Love.

There is very little raunch on this album of mostly slow and introspective songs. Although accomplished and enjoyable, An Imitation Of Love is not one of Millie Jackson's more memorable albums.
