Compact, classic design with belting sound
on 10 January 2016
I have a couple of docking stations. Both perform well but the fitments are for earlier generation iPods. I wanted one with lightning fitment which would work with iPod, iPad mini and iPhone. And I was hoping for outstanding volume and sound quality. This Bose SoundDock ticks every box.
As with any Bose product, the quality is excellent. Black high gloss finish, clean, neat classic design. It's unobtrusive and will sit well in any surrounding. The lightning connector works with any of the recent iPods/phones with the smaller fitment. I've also tried my iPod mini and although it's slightly less stable than the iPod, it sits well on the connector and as long as it isn't moved around, it performs well and looks good with the album or playlist clearly visible on the screen. The device charges when connected.
The remote controls all functions; volume, play order, pause, rewind on and off. It operates well over a distance > 12 feet, which should be enough for most domestic areas. The remote is neat but feels substantial and all buttons operate at a single touch. It'll also work with other devices which don't have the lightning fitment, but you need to buy a cable connector. I already have one from a Sony soundock and this speaker works fine with a Sony Walkman or when connected to the laptop.
As for the sound, it's outstanding. Deep rich bass, clear crisp highs. There's no tinny quality and even at relatively low volume setting, it fills a room. I can't imagine a home setting which would need anything better.
The only perceived drawback may be that there's no Bluetooth. Docking stations have fallen out of favour a little in the last couple of years or so. Not a negative for me, but if you're expecting Bluetooth connectivity, look for a different model. There are plenty.
