You just don't know where Eau Claire's renaissance man Justin Vernon is going to show up next. He's a bit of a rock'n'roll Zelig, this one.
Here he is doing what countless guys and their buddies have been doing for the past 50 or so years: hanging out, drinking beer and banging out some blues-inflected, swampy, laidback rock. This stuff isn't rocket science; it's not ethereal or cerebral, it is visceral, rough and ready and it swings and sways like a Saturday night at a southern bar.
There are echoes of early Black Keys, AM-era Wilco, Jack Logan, Reigning Sound and even, in some of Vernon's guitar playing, Tres Hombres-era ZZ Top and the influence of hours spent listening to all the usual suspects (Dylan & the Band, early-70s Stones, Young, Allmans etc).
It's a lot of fun, it's down and dirty, it reeks of the Mississippi, and you should own this.
These really are grownass men.

A very fun rock'n'roll album, showing a less serious side of Justin Vernon, but with the same musical knowhow which brought us the likes of Bon Iver and Volcano Choir. Some serious shouts to the Rolling Stones & John Lee Hooker. This is a great album.

Top blues from a top performer, well played and constructed songs but a couple of lightweight throwaways that could have been replaced with the unavailable ep of theirs

I have this album on as I write this review and it is brilliant! Classic blues rock and roll style. A really likeable sound overall. However, if you are looking for a Bon Iver substitute you are not going to find it here!
