4.0 out of 5 stars Game of Souls, 21 May 2014

This review is from: Game of Souls (The Quintessence Cycle Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
I enjoyed this book immensely. The characters are engaging, the plot is fast paced, and the narrative is cohesive.

The only real problem is understanding the magical system, which since this is the pivot upon which the plot turns, actually becomes rather a big problem. It's a bit of a catch twenty two situation, to make sense of the plot you need to understand the magical system whilst the slow revelation of the main bad guy's motives hinges on his use and manipulation of the magic system. To ease this situation, there is an extensive explanation of the magic system at the end of the book, but not as easy to access when using a digital copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Found by chance - and really glad, 3 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Game of Souls (The Quintessence Cycle Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
Stumbled across the book and found it thoroughly enjoyable with a good story across different characters. The most annoying thing was at the end when I found I need to wait for book 2.

Looking forward to the next instalment and in the meantime will try other works by the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written & decent characters., 12 Jun. 2013

Another recommendation & another winner! Certainly a different take on magic from what we are used to, but if I was being hyper critical it would be that Terry leaves his description of each "soul" to an appendum at the end - in a book this might not be a problem but on an e-reader/kindle .....
The plot can get confusing at times, in fact Terry himself get's mixed up a couple of times, in particular with our main characters Keedar & Winslow.
The basic premise is that we have the priveledged , who have nearly everything & the under priveledged who have the one thing that the rich guys need, in this case "soul". So we have the son of one of the top families & the son of one of the top guys in the "underworld",they meet & are some how drawn to each other, there is no great surprise when the reader gets the "reveal" although there is a slight twist.
All in all a good read, there is a lot of political in fighting but it does help to build the plot & there is enough action to keep the reader happy, although I wouldn't have been too upset if there had been more !
Unfortunately there is no release date for the sequel & the author is currently concentrating on No.3 in one of his other series.

Never read anything by this author before but I am always willing to give a new author a try. Glad I did. Although a bit confusing at the start it soon developed into a really good read. Decent characters, interesting plot and back story with plenty of action. Definitely buying the next instalment!
