A broken EA game. who would have thought?
on 12 July 2014
I was a huge fan of the THQ series of the ufc, especially undisputed 3, which was perfected in my eyes. Now, ea sports ufc... After being excited since announcement i finaIy got my hands on it, and i'm so so dissapointed with it. Before i dive into the problems i will say yes, the graphics are fantastic, and it showcases the capabilities of the new consoles, but unfortunately that's all it has got going for it.
Career mode -
You start of by creating your own fighter (there is no option to select from the UFC roster). The customisation you are presented with is ok, not too much and not too little. Not on the scale of undisputed 3. However, you can use ea's gameface option, where you go on thier website, upload a few snaps of yourself and using these they create a in-game version of yourself that you can use in career mode and online. However it ended up being far too much hassel and the game wouldn't connect with my ea account to create my character. i know alot of others had this problem also. Now, to the career. A nice surprise here was having to fight your way through the TUF competetion in order to win a contract with the UFC. You also get 20-30 second videos from UFC fighters throughout the career which i thought was is pretty cool. As i progressed and won my contract it became obvious how tedious and repetative it all was. You are offered a fight, you accept, you train in 3 different areas, for example; wrestling/takedowns, submissions and standup. Depending on how well you do in each will determine the amount of skill points you aquire, and using these you can build up atrributes and/or gain additional moves. Then you fight your opponant and repeat this over and over untill your career has ended. Trust me, it gets boring, fast.
Now this is where i was hoping it to shine. But i was hugely let down. Alot of the people you play against spam the same moves like takedowns to get easy wins. Also they will leave mid game if they think they are loosing so they can save thier record (sigh). ea actually implemented a system now though so if you leave mid game you will be penalised by getting a automatic loss and a short suspention. However, this has created more problems than it has solved. As we all know, Ea has horrific servers, and you are constantly loosing connection to them. Now, when this happens to you mid game, you are treated as if you purposely left the game, so each time this happens you are given a loss on you record and given a short suspention. 18 of my 24 losses have been because of this. It really is like being slapped and then backhanded. Also the majority of the games lag.
This is far inferior to undisputed 3. Jabs and leg kicks are rendered useless as they don't keep your opponent at bay. It is quite evident that there is not a unique moveset for each fighter and that it has just been a copy and paste job. I hate that you can't knee an opponent going for a takedown - I know for a fact this would help fighting takedown spammers, just like in undisputed 3. Also, when your opponent is knocked to the floor you cant dive on them, instead to have to walk over and press the punch button to mount them. Annoyingly, there is no run option either. I dislike that the damage caused to the head, torso and legs can reduce and dissapear if that part is not been hit in a while. The new parry system is so overpowered. To paint a picture, i can spend 2 rounds laying into my opponents body. The third round comes and the opponent parry's my shot and counters with a left to my head, this immediately stuns me giving my opponent a 10 second window to throw whatever he/she wants at me, resulting in a knockout. It is so fustrating when this happens. Overall the gameplay feels sluggish and slow, and that's fighting at banterweight, it becomes painfully slow at heavy weight.
Graphics are great. But you are left with a sour taste in your mouth due to the tedious and repetative career and broken online. If you are coming from the THQ series and expecting a next gen expierence with solid gameplay then you will be very disapointed. It's a real shame ea has taken over this franchise because we can never trust what they will give us. If you're looking for a game to play on your new console i HIGHLY recommend wolfenstein.
