This is another first class release from Backbeats' ongoing exploration of the US soul scene. Focussing solely on Memphis' Hi Records between 1968 and 1979, there is an overload of quality tracks from both established and lesser known artists.

Ann Peebles opens the album with 'I Didn't Take Your Man'. With it's extended spoken word intro, it finds the groove and stays on it (and it also features on the Backbeats 'I Get My Groove' compilation). 'What Made You Change Your Mind' by Eddie McGee is a mid-tempo gem with some gorgeous female backing vocals. The Memphians provide some solid funk with 'Slidin' In and Out (Of My Neigbours House)' and O.V. Wright's 'I Found Peace' is almost too smooth for words. The quality of the backing vocals and harmony arrangements is noticeable throughout.

With a couple of tracks apiece from Syl Johnson and Al Green and with a generous playing time of 74:29 this is, given the quality of the music and the almost give away price, essential listening and the Backbeats series continues to exceed expectations.

It is great that there are so many new compilations of soul music of all types around at the moment and that most of them have "new" examples. This is a great compilation with some items I remember from original release but many i hadn't heard before. The is a broad spectrum of the genre and some great tracks especially from women artists. Smashing.

Well done to the Backbeat people for great music at bargain prices, plus the sound quality is very good too!
I have purchased most of them and they are all worth the money in my opinion, but then I like to find great music from the past and Backbeats deliver great soul from different periods and geographical areas, I like another reviewer love the opening track by Anne Peebles brilliant spoken intro... buy it and play it loud in the car, makes the journey fly, and support Backbeats!

Goodness me,there was so much great soul music around in the 70s. And so much of it barely saw the light of day in this country. The good news is that Backbeats is systematically righting that wrong. This is a fine, fine compilation. I love the Jean Plum tracks - what a sweet voice she has. The Quiet Elegance track is a funky grower. And The Melodics is a little gem. As are the Ann Peebles tracks. There are so many good mid-tempo songs on this selection. I guarantee I'll still be playing this cd ten years from now. And so will you.

As a long term fan of Soul music I was pleasantly surprised that I was unfamiliar with the majority of tracks on this CD. The music contained is of a consistently high quality and I will now be endeavouring to source more tracks from these lesser known artists.
All lovers of Soul music should invest in the (very) modest cost of this CD and enrich your collection.

Great to get a cd with fairly unknown artists such as Jean Plum, Willie Walker and James Fry. Keep it up Backbeats.
