Kylesa are a difficult band to describe and so is this album. The sound can be sludgy and heavy (Exhale and We're Taking This), wide and spacious (Unspoken), melancholic (Steady Breakdown), reminiscent of Pumpkins style alt rock (Vulture's Landing, Quicksand) and even venturing into coldwave-ish pop (Low Tide). The vocals are more melodic than ever before, with Laura Pleasants' dreamy voice being prominent throughout most of the album, whilst still be reinforced by Cope's hardcore yell. The influence of psychedelia is very obvious on this record, with a large range of effects and synthy noises being showcased. A very interesting album from a very interesting band that fans of Spiral Shadow will most likely enjoy a great deal.

It sounds quite rough like a new band who doesn't have much cash for recording, but it doesn't really work with the music, which is good. I was disappointed but it is just a flesh wound they will come back with much better next time around. Buy the collection of early records which sounds like it is recorded better than this. I haven't got the two CDs mixed up.
