There are four LP albums included in this compilation, all by tenor saxophonist Dave Pell's Octet, the titles of which are sufficient to convey what's on offer. "Jazz and Romantic Places" dates from April 1955, "Jazz Goes Dancing" followed in mid-1956, while "I Had the Craziest Dream" combined two sessions from mid-1955 with one from September 1957. Finally, "A Pell of a Time" was recorded over three sessions in early 1957. Not surprisingly, given Dave's background with the Les Brown Band (from which he drew his original ensemble in 1955) the majority of the tracks are from the Great American Songbook. Their transformation into the quintessence of mid-50s West Coast jazz was achieved by skilful arrangements, by the likes of André Previn, Shorty Rogers and Marty Paich, a dulcet approach, and a relaxed swing. The result is a knockout.
