5.0 out of 5 stars "Farewell daddy blues"
BOARDWALK EMPIRE's 4th season adds even more brutal violence (yes, it was possible) and brilliant character-study with several supporting cast dominating screen-time (Chalky, Agent Jim, Mr. Purnsley, Will Thompson and the twitchy Dr. Narcisse). Even so, Steve Buscemi remains the #1 reason to follow the show religiously. Lots of fun time is spent in Florida and, of course,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so good
Not as good as season 1 2 or 3 but still watchable even with all the black boring stories not so much action this season though watched for free was not going to pay the rip off bluray price should be £25 max.
Have bought it direct from Sweden season 4 bluray brand new sealed for £28.98 including postage.

Lots of fun time is spent in Florida and, of course, in Chicago focusing on the rise of Al Capone (A role and accent mastered by British actor, Stephen Graham).

Overall, the finest gift of the EMPIRE is its dedication to realistic-fiction with spot-on set-pieces, costumes and exquisite jazz along with our anti-heroes believable story-lines over the years. BOARDWALK is a gorgeous, potent, harrowing concoction of the bleak, gang-land 20's. To the lost . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars There's A Skunk in your Cellar, 3 Dec 2013

This review is from: Boardwalk Empire - Season 4 [Blu-ray] [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
The background theme in Season Four is the rise of black gangsters and the power of the FBI. Nucky owes Chalky White a big favour for saving his life in Season Three which he repays by gifting the Onyx Club to him. Chalky comes into contact with a sinister Harlem gangster called Narcisse who uses Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association as a front for his activities. He is pseudo-religious and rather than supporting the fight for social, political and economic freedom for black Americans he undermines it with hard drugs. The conflict between White and Narcisse runs through the entire season and drags Nucky into choosing sides.
Nucky expands his bootlegging operation into bringing up rum from Florida and he starts an affair with Sally who runs a bar in the alligator infested swamps. Margaret who terminated their marriage turns up in New York and meets an old friend.
Gillian has finally lost any custody or contact with young Tommy Darmody after a hearing finds she ran a bordello and she sinks deeper into desperation but a saviour appears. Richard Harrow suffers a crisis of confidence, as he finds he can no longer kill with impunity, but he too finds someone.
Van Alden just wants to be a family man in Chicago but gets caught between the ruthless O'Banion gang and the more ruthless Capones and must decide between them.
All the while, as the various plots unwind the Bureau of Investigation (an early incarnation of the FBI) and its new Controller Hoover, is looking at the rise of black power and the possibility that there is organised crime in America. They must choose one of these "threats" to America to concentrate their attention. The BI are just as merciless as any of the gangsters and as they seek to turn players to informers they might just bring down the whole house of cards.
Season Four then is a rewarding experience which takes a good long hard look at the race issues of 1920s America and the fledgling FBI adds a whole new level of tension to the business. Who can be trusted and who has been got at?

5.0 out of 5 stars season 4 and what a season!, 24 Aug 2014
This has to be up there as one on the best ever tv series, the stories are addictive and draws the viewer in from the very first episode, so much better than recent cinema offerings, no cgi just pure story telling at its finest. The sets, costumes, performances and period detail are nothing less than stunning. Can't wait for the fifth season!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "mix you up the jersey version", 20 Aug 2014
Nucky and the ritz are no more, a darker season with dr narcisse proving a slippery foe for chalky n his new club. More shenanigans from eli n son willie..the fbi involvement only clouds the people in this brilliant season 4. Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost but not quite as good as the first second and third series, 22 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Almost but not quite as good as the first second and third series. The main character continues to intrigue but without him it would be just mindless slaughter and mayhem. Some wonderful acting though by all of them and a storyline that continues to fascinate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roll on Series 5, 12 Sep 2014

I never watch this on TV, cant stand the continual "breaks" for the adverts. I just wait for the series to come out on DVD and then watch it in great three hour sessions. Cant wait for the next series 5 and sad to know it will be the last.

An excellent series which i have recommended to relations and friends who have also enjoyed the series, with strong story lines and characters based in an interesting period of US history - the 'Prohibition era'.
