5.0 out of 5 stars "Farewell daddy blues"
BOARDWALK EMPIRE's 4th season adds even more brutal violence (yes, it was possible) and brilliant character-study with several supporting cast dominating screen-time (Chalky, Agent Jim, Mr. Purnsley, Will Thompson and the twitchy Dr. Narcisse). Even so, Steve Buscemi remains the #1 reason to follow the show religiously. Lots of fun time is spent in Florida and, of course,...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, lazy and boring
I found this series disappointing. The writing was lazy and the storylines incoherent and disjointed at times. The storyline involving Chalky and Daughter was boring, especially in the second last episode. And hadn't we seen this before with Eli? And what happened to him at the end? That wasn't very clear, but at that stage I had lost interest. The Gillian Darmody...

Lots of fun time is spent in Florida and, of course, in Chicago focusing on the rise of Al Capone (A role and accent mastered by British actor, Stephen Graham).

Overall, the finest gift of the EMPIRE is its dedication to realistic-fiction with spot-on set-pieces, costumes and exquisite jazz along with our anti-heroes believable story-lines over the years. BOARDWALK is a gorgeous, potent, harrowing concoction of the bleak, gang-land 20's. To the lost . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars There's A Skunk in your Cellar, 3 Dec 2013

The background theme in Season Four is the rise of black gangsters and the power of the FBI. Nucky owes Chalky White a big favour for saving his life in Season Three which he repays by gifting the Onyx Club to him. Chalky comes into contact with a sinister Harlem gangster called Narcisse who uses Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association as a front for his activities. He is pseudo-religious and rather than supporting the fight for social, political and economic freedom for black Americans he undermines it with hard drugs. The conflict between White and Narcisse runs through the entire season and drags Nucky into choosing sides.
Nucky expands his bootlegging operation into bringing up rum from Florida and he starts an affair with Sally who runs a bar in the alligator infested swamps. Margaret who terminated their marriage turns up in New York and meets an old friend.
Gillian has finally lost any custody or contact with young Tommy Darmody after a hearing finds she ran a bordello and she sinks deeper into desperation but a saviour appears. Richard Harrow suffers a crisis of confidence, as he finds he can no longer kill with impunity, but he too finds someone.
Van Alden just wants to be a family man in Chicago but gets caught between the ruthless O'Banion gang and the more ruthless Capones and must decide between them.
All the while, as the various plots unwind the Bureau of Investigation (an early incarnation of the FBI) and its new Controller Hoover, is looking at the rise of black power and the possibility that there is organised crime in America. They must choose one of these "threats" to America to concentrate their attention. The BI are just as merciless as any of the gangsters and as they seek to turn players to informers they might just bring down the whole house of cards.
Season Four then is a rewarding experience which takes a good long hard look at the race issues of 1920s America and the fledgling FBI adds a whole new level of tension to the business. Who can be trusted and who has been got at?

5.0 out of 5 stars season 4 and what a season!, 24 Aug 2014
This review is from: Boardwalk Empire - Season 4 [DVD] (DVD)
This has to be up there as one on the best ever tv series, the stories are addictive and draws the viewer in from the very first episode, so much better than recent cinema offerings, no cgi just pure story telling at its finest. The sets, costumes, performances and period detail are nothing less than stunning. Can't wait for the fifth season!!!!

Nucky and the ritz are no more, a darker season with dr narcisse proving a slippery foe for chalky n his new club. More shenanigans from eli n son willie..the fbi involvement only clouds the people in this brilliant season 4. Enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars A very watchable series, 23 July 2014

Very enjoyable series. The trials and tribulations of Nucky Thompson, his family and cohorts is always great to watch. Not as good as the first two series but if you're a fan of the show you'll enjoy this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best cast on TV, 15 April 2014
Every scene in this show is meticulously crafted. The casting is impeccable. Though good from the start, Boardwalk Empire really hit its stride in series 3 - and series 4 is the best yet. Breaking Bad, True Detective, and this are the 3 best shows of the 21st century thus far. Brilliant.
