4.0 out of 5 stars Background stories, 15 Oct. 2013

This review is from: Star Trek Volume 4 (Paperback)
The stories from issues #13-16 of IDW's Star Trek comic book are collected as Star Trek Volume 4. There is a mixture of `background' stories and `re-imagining' of the original TV stories. They are of an uniformly good quality, both of scripting and artwork; the characterisation is excellent, and you really feel as if this is the crew of the new film series' Enterprise.

Issue #13 - `Henshaw' - tells the story of Mr "Cupcake", the red-shirted security guard who had a couple of run-ins with Kirk in the first film; or rather, this is his recounting of his adventures as a red-shirt - including a discussion of the `red shirt' jokes so often made by the ignorant. This is the life of a red-shire as seen through someone who is proud to wear it. (And he gets an apology from Captain Kirk too!).

Issue #14 - `Keenser's Story' - is about the little alien who we first met with Mr Scott in the first film. He actually has quite a deep back story, running from First Contact with his people, to graduation from the Academy as an engineer - he is not a pet, but a senior engineer - through to the first use - by him - of the Jeffries' Tube to access vital parts of the ship's systems.

Issues #15 & #16 - `Mirrored' - is an excellent `Mirror Mirror' story, set in the other universe, where Commander Jim Kirk hunts down Nero in his Klingon prison for revenge for the death of his father; then, taking Nero's ship, he sets off to wreak vengeance on, well, everyone, starting with Captain Spock and the Enterprise, stopping off to pick up the future Mr Spock and his Red Matter, and then heading off to destroy Vulcan, just for being alien. Expect the unexpected in the Mirror Universe...

I have to say I was quite impressed with this volume. Especially the 'Red-shirt' tale Rather poignant given the storyline in the Star Trek Into Darkness. Please give it a go. it's worth a reading for us 'Trek' fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars To boldly go..., 2 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Star Trek Volume 4 (Paperback)
This is a great companion to the 2009 J.J. Abrams movie, and I can only assume a great lead up to the 2013 sequel. It contains some revamped old adventures from the original 1960's show, and also includes some original adventures in-line with the new Universe Abrams created.
