In this short story, we're taken back to when Caina was 16, and working (as a Ghost) in the theatre, under the aegis of Theodosia, leading lady of the Grand Imperial Opera, and secretly the Ghost Circlemaster of the city. A guard dies after drinking poisoned wine carried by Caina, who is despatched to investigate the crime, and identify both the intended victim and the murderer.

This is an action-packed tale involving disguises, Kindred assassins, fights and trickery, romantic(?) assignations, bluff and double bluff, but for once all contained within the theatre world, rather than the Ghosts' usual larger milieu of world politics.

The story is well-written, and Caina's shrewdness continues to grow, as she deals with the murky world of violence and death, bringing her own sense of justice into play. This tale is set immediately before "Child of the Ghosts", so Caina's constant awareness of her inability to have a child is more understandable, but the author will have to guard against this becoming such a constant cry throughout the books that it stops gaining Caina sympathy, and instead becomes merely an irritant.

The whole series is clever; the plots are complex and satisfying, and, while "Ghost Aria" is almost light relief by comparison, it is an extremely satisfying episode in its own right, worth a lot more than the 73p I paid.

This is a great little story from Caina's time at the Grand Imperial Opera and fits in well with the Ghost Series
